  2. Mission to contribute to the development of a more sustainable way of preserving the built (World) heritage, based on preventive conservation, monitoring and maintenance as it is better for preserving authenticity, as it is cost-effective, as it empowers people in dealing with heritage.

  3. Vision • Conservation specialist should be able to • apply preventive conservation strategies • monitor the state of preservation, resulting in • maintenance if possible and conservation if necessary; • Authorities should be able to develop the legal and administrative conditions for a maintenance based approach • Periodic reporting of WH Sites should include maintenance and monitoring to support preventive conservation.

  4. Objectives (1) to exchange • research results • educational experiences • good practices to develop • improved methodologies • management strategies to enhance • monitoring capacities of World Heritage Sites • capacity especially in Least Developed Countries (LDC).

  5. Objectives (2) to build up capacity • scientific research projects and programs • training programs, including support material. (Approach should be inter-sectoral aiming at integrating preventive conservation in social, cultural and educational activities contributing to sustainable management of (World) Heritage Sites; special attention will be given to facilitate access to those activities from people in Least Developed Countries). to increase awareness and interest of communities in heritage maintenance and preservation.

  6. Strategy (1) • Maintain an international exchange platform for the network (PRECOMOS) on Preventive Conservation, Maintenance and Monitoring of Monuments(website: precomos.org) • Providing on-line information resources, organisation of short courses and master courses, seminars and specific meetings. • Website: • Public part • Exchange level (who gives also receives: member level) • “PhD school” for research and intensive exchange (member+ level)

  7. Strategy (2) • Set-up a (short) course to respond to the needs in periodic reporting for preventive conservation, monitoring and maintenance issues in collaboration with • UNESCO WHC • ICOMOS and ICCROM • related institutes or research centres. • Dissemination efforts with national and regional authorities and with local stakeholders, PRECOMOS seminars • Leuven, December 2007 & March 2009 • Cuenca, November/December 2009 • South-Africa 2010? • …
