  1. PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT AND RECOGNITION (PLAR) FOR MATURE STUDENTS PART B: ORIENTATION MATERIALS

  2. POLICY/PROGRAM MEMORANDUM No. 132 • All boards must develop and implement policies and procedures related to PLAR for mature students, consistent with provincial policy (OSS, sections 6.6 and 8.2), beginning on February 1, 2004

  3. BOARD’S RESPONSIBILITY • Boards must ensure that a clear statement is published in the school course calendars outlining: - when mature students may participate in each of the PLAR processes - what opportunities for challenge are available in the board’s schools - the time frames for the completion of the challenge and equivalency processes for specific Grade 11 and 12 courses

  4. Sample “PLAR for Mature Students” Brochure • Is intended for a wide audience (employers, agencies, educators, students) • Provides a description of PLAR for mature students and indicates students who may participate in it • Outlines the major features of each of the three processes

  5. Sample “Course Calendar/Web Site Statement” • Provides basic information about the “PLAR for Mature Students” processes • Suitable for inclusion on board/school Web sites

  6. Sample “Fact Sheets” • One Fact Sheet on each of the three PLAR processes • Intended primarily for potential mature students • Each Fact Sheet: - describes the particular PLAR process - indicates the number of credits that may be granted - indicates the resulting entry on the student’s OST - provides timelines

  7. Diploma Requirements for Mature Students Under PLAR • Mature students must have 30 credits for an OSSD • Up to 16 Grade 9 and 10 equivalent credits may be granted through the Grade 9 and 10 Individual Assessment/Equivalency process

  8. Diploma Requirements Under PLAR – continued … • 10 of the remaining Grade 11 and 12 credits may be earned in three ways: - through the Grade 11 and 12 Equivalency process - through the Grade 11 and 12 Challenge process - by the student taking the course

  9. Diploma Requirements Under PLAR – continued … • Mature students must earn 4 Grade 11 and 12 credits by taking the courses at secondary school, through correspondence or through any of the alternative ways described in OSS (section 6.8)

Diploma Requirements Under PLAR – continued … • Mature students working towards an OSSD under OSS must: - complete each of the 4 Grade 11 and 12 compulsory credit requirements - successfully complete the OSSLT or the OSSLC - complete the number of hours of community involvement activities determined by the principal

  11. Four Grade 11 and 12 Compulsory Credit Requirements • Grade 11 English: successfully complete or challenge or provide a transcript for ENG3C, ENG3E, or ENG3U • Grade 12 English: successfully complete ENG4C, ENG4E or ENG4U ( or OSSLC) • Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics (some substitution permitted) • Grade 11 or 12 Science or one of Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 Technological Education courses (some substitution permitted)

  12. Literacy Graduation Requirement • Successful completion of either the OSSLT or the OSSLC • Students who have been eligible to write the OSSLT at least twice and who have been unsuccessful at least once are eligible to take the course. • A mature student who has failed the OSSLT once may take the OSSLC. The principal may use his or her discretion in determining whether one of the two opportunities to take the OSSLT occurred prior to the student’s return to school.

  13. Community Involvement Activities • As part of the OSS diploma requirements, students must complete 40 hours of community involvement activities • Principals will determine the number of hours of community involvement activities that a mature student will have to complete

  14. Sample “Orientation Session Outline” • The sample “Orientation Session Outline” is intended to assist principals, counsellors and teachers with planning an information session for mature students about the PLAR processes
