PLA Workshop summary (nov-2) • 130 participants, 50 colleges at South Seattle CC • Shared our current practices • Three speakers from ACE, CAEL, College Board (CLEP) • Student panel about experiences earning PLA credits • Coding and Tracking PLA in SMS (Handout available) • NWCCU 25% limitation on some PLA (Handout available) • Next PLA workgroup meeting on December 6th • Two conferences next year – one West, one East
CAEL Conference summary (NOV 5-9) • Veteran SUPPORTIVE, not just friendly • Work with vet centers to host workshops for faculty & staff • “Certify” vet supportive contacts and give a sticker to display • Create a separate vets enrollment checklist with vet contacts listed • Encourage vet student groups to connect using Facebook (or Google+) • ACE Military Guide • Very thorough and well-documented process for determining credit • Minnesota System (MNSCU) has a central database for ACE crosswalks • Familiarize faculty with the ACE guide and have them okay crosswalks from related military training to their courses
CAEL Conference cont. (NOV 5-9) • Competency-Based Education • South New Hampshire University (SNHU), true competency-based ed. • Degrees are a collection of 120 competencies, all online • Students complete Tasks that assess one or more competencies • No classes, all self-study with provided (low-cost or free) resources • Mentors available, students encouraged to learn collaboratively • Grading done by trained assessors within 48 hours (goal) • Student pays for a period of time to complete Tasks • Online Advising
Next Steps • Encourage faculty to consider PLA for students • Talk with Registrar about PLA coding (handout) • Tell students about PLA options on your campus • Continue talks with NWCCU reps about: • removing 25% restriction on certain types of PLA • not requiring PLA to be indicated on the transcript • Develop ‘best practices’ template for sharing PLA info with students (PLA Workgroup) • Standardize the transcription procedure for PLA (JTC) • Develop list serve for PLA related information statewide • Distribute cost model for consideration by campuses
