History • Eastern Washington University has been awarding credit for Prior Learning through the Portfolio Assessment Program since Fall quarter 1979(Department of Interdisciplinary Studies) • EWU has evaluated more than 2,000 portfolios • Awarding on average 37 credits per portfolio • Program follows guidelines established by the Council of Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), and continues to follow the 10 standards for quality assurance in assessing credits for career experiences (“Assessing Learning: Standards, Principles & Procedures”, Urban Whitaker, CAEL 1989)

Prior Learning Credits 45 credits: maximum eligibility Prior learning credit applied toward elective credits only—not general education core or upper division (300-499) Credit is awarded in a block form and is designated with the Interdisciplinary Departmental (ITDS) prefix & number: ITDS 301 Students must have completed 30 EWU academic credits before the prior learning credits are officially transcribed

Portfolio Components VOLUME #2 Documentation Index All Documents(Referenced in Learning Autobiography) Documentation: Supports the claims made in Learning Autobiography Clarifies, illustrates, reinforces, supports, validates, embellishes, exemplifies, enhances, verifies, examines, explores & expose

Portfolio Process Adult learners meet with Director to review their experiential learning Enrolls in ITDS 300(4cr) Portfolio Development course(Fall, Winter & Spring terms) Students complete about 80% of Portfolio during the quarter enrolled in ITDS 300 Generally a 1.5 quarter project When Portfolio meets ITDS standards, document is submitted to academic department, chair selects faculty evaluator

  7. Portfolio Process EWU fee structure for Portfolio Assessment: Flat fee of $675, covers up to 45 credits (elective credit) Pay faculty evaluators for assessment: $150 per portfolio Portfolio assessment time, generally 1 quarter

  8. Faculty Review Portfolios for the Following: Learning outcomes Discipline-specific competencies Skills and abilities Demonstrate proficiencies Course/class equivalencies Transferable skills Career mobility and advancement Training and professional development Professional growth and education
