  1. One and two step Equations SOL 7.14:The student will be able to solve one and two step equations in one variable

  2. Two step Equations • Two step equations means you need to solve two operations in order to find the unknown value • The two operations can be any combination between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division.

  3. + + = _ _ Leave the variable alone Add the opposite on both sides Of the equation Remove all zero pairs from the equation Divide -4 in two equal parts The answer is x = -2 Solve 2x + (-2)= -6

  4. Now let’s do it algebraically… Leave the variable alone by adding the opposite Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Reduce the fraction if is possible Cross out similar numbers Remove all zero pairs 2x = -4 2x + (-2) = -6 2 2 2 2 2x = -4 x = -2

  5. Now let’s do it algebraically… -3 + 5w = 17 5w = 20 Leave the variable alone by adding the opposite Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Reduce the fraction if is possible Cross out similar numbers Remove all zero pairs 3 3 5 5 5w = 20 w = 4

  6. Now let’s do it algebraically… Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Reduce the fraction if is possible Remove all zero pairs -5 + y =35 y =40 2 2 5 5 (2) (2) y =80

  7. Now let’s do it algebraically… Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Leave the variable alone by writing the opposite Reduce the fraction if is possible Remove all zero pairs 3x +1=4 3x –(-1)=4 3x=3 -1 -1 2 2 2 6 (2) (2) = 3 (3) (3) x =2

  8. Time for practice:Find the value of the variable. 1) 2H – 3 = 5 5) a – (- 4) = 6 4 H = 4 a = 8 2) 5y – 2 = -7 6) 3p – (-2) = 8 y = -1 p = 2 3) K + 1 = 10 7) 2L + (- 1) = -3 5 7 K = 45 L = -7 4) m + 5 = -1 8) -4g + (-2) = 2 3 m = -18 g = 1
