  1. Daily Quiz • Answer on a quarter sheet of paper (share one piece of paper 4 ways in quad) • Based on the “We Don’t Believe in Politics” reading: • 1. Why • 2. What • 3. What • 4. How

  2. Unique and shared: Work here and there? • In your quad, nominate a leader. • The leader makes a list of 5 things that each member of your group shares in common. • Try to make a list that is different from all other groups in the classroom • Each group will get 1 point for each shared trait that is unique to their group! • Hint: “we’re all human” or “we’re all wearing clothes” doesn’t count for points… think harder! • Do you all speak Spanish? • Can you all cook? • You all haven’t seen “Gangnam Style”?

  3. Books • Checking out books today. • We also have an online textbook; I put information on how to access that on the webpage (http://mrpitner.tk) • We will return to the classroom after getting our books!

  4. Discussion on “politics” • Text in a possible discussion question to 37607 with your message starting with the code • Things to consider: how can politics matter to you as a young American? • What needs to change to make it relevant?

  5. My questions: • Your quad will run mini discussions based on each question, then share your discussion with the class. • Is politics simply something only for old people? Why? • Politics isn’t built to involve regular people… • Once you vote, does your opinion matter any more?

  6. #1A: If politics don’t change, why will you be active/inactive in politics? • #1B: If politics do change, why will you be active/inactive in politics?

  7. What is Government? “Governments constantly choose between telling lies and fighting wars, with the end result always being the same. One will always lead to the other.”  ― Thomas Jefferson, President

  8. “Democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.” ― Ronald Reagan, President “Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.” ― H.L. Mencken, author “The government is us; WE are the government, you and I." ― Theodore Roosevelt, President

  9. “You have to remember one thing about the will of the people: it wasn't that long ago that we were swept away by the Macarena, [planking, and High School Musical].” -Jon Stewart, comedian

  10. So what is Obama talking about? • Acceptance speech 2012 • #2A: Do citizens really have a responsibility beyond voting? • #2B: Why/how/what is it?

  11. Obama? • Many of the most important reforms in the United States have occurred because of huge, sustained efforts by many people. • Elected officials passed legislation due to people’s efforts.  • Examples include: • the minimum wage, • the 8-hour work day, • the right of African-Americans and women to vote, • Social Security for the elderly, • rights for lesbians and gays. • Often, people were fighting for changes that most people thought were impossible, and that weren't even on the political agenda.  • #3A: What are the most important issues to you today? #3B: What should be done about these issues?

  12. But where did this all come from? • We may not have much concern about the voting process today, but what set up the world we live in? • #4: What would our government have to do to you or your community to make you leave the country or fight against it?
