Enhancements in the LSD Prototype: Design and Structural Improvements for Layered Surface Detector

The LSD Prototype (Layered Surface Detector) has undergone significant enhancements, focusing on structural integrity and ease of use. Key updates include the repositioning of ribs beneath the top layer, improving space utilization and reducing weight to 30 kg with a maximum diameter of 320 mm. The new design features a 360 mm hole for easy access, a simple hinge system to lower costs, and improved fastening using rivets and anti-rotation pins. Future tests will address the size and watertightness of the tank's hole and the mechanism required for opening the LSD in water.

  1. LSD Prototype(Layered Surface Detector) • LSD prototype status and lessons: • The ribswereplacedunder the top layer • -> no more punching of the layers • -> gain of space • Volume and weight -> Dia max 320 mm, ~ 30 kg • Holeopeningon top of the tank -> Dia 360 mm, hand milling machine • Simple hinge system -> Lower the overallcost • -> addsome rivets, ribswithflate end, anti-rotation cotter pin • Opening tests -> Shrouds system Ok, max strength = 190 daN! • To bedefined: • Size and watertightnessof the hole on the tank liner • Strengthneeded to open the LSD in water • Mechanismused to open the LSD into the tank • -> combinationbtwpulling on the hinges and pushing on the central tube

  7. LSD Prototype(Layered Surface Detector) tank liner 1550 mm

  8. LSD Prototype(Layered Surface Detector) • Liner opening, liner watertightness (to bedefined) • Actual proposition: • Introduction of a large foldawayflange • Gluing of the flange on the liner • Cutting out the liner (Flange = pattern) • 2 halfflanges are placedat the inner part of the liner • Flangesscrewing = the liner is in sandwich btwflanges 550 1200

  9. LSD Prototype(Layered Surface Detector) Mechanism used to open the LSD into the tank (to be defined) combination btw pulling on the hinges and pushing on the central tube

  10. LSD Prototype(Layered Surface Detector) Strength required to keep the LSD opened : 16,5 daN (46,5 – 30)
