Aim of study • We have 3 assessment objectives in English class that we are studying. • By mastering the 3 objectives, it improves our skills on English literature and enhances our ability to ace the IGCSE English paper more easily.
The First Objective • “Ability to read any written material forms with understanding and able to give comment based on it’s effectiveness.” • The written material forms can be identified based on 3 things: -Genre -Tone -Writer’s Purpose
Genre • It is a class or a category in a text • It can be Fiction or Non Fiction • Fiction texts are the ones that are made up and NOT real (example: Fairy Tails, Sci-Fi and Fantasy) • Non Fiction texts are the ones that are true and contains facts that you can check on the real world (example: Auto biography, Travel, History and Advertisement)
Tone • Tone gives a text an intonation in written form • A tone in a text can be produced by picking certain words that will give an “impact” when the reader reads the text. A tone is often related to the writer’s purpose • Some common uses of tone in a text: -Sarcasm, Persuasive, Historic and Humorous
Writer’s Purpose • The Writer’s purpose is the aim/objective of the writer of writing a text • The 4 main purposes of a text are: -To inform, to instruct, to entertain and to persuade • Other purposes : -To scare, to advertise, to ridicule, to make the reader think, to amuse, etc.
The Second Objective • “To gain knowledge and understanding of English language features to be able to identify the genre, writer’s purpose and tone of a text.” • The 3 English language features to identify: -Vocabulary: The selection of words used -Figures of speech: The expressive use of words -Structure of the text: How the words are put into sentences, and sentences put into paragraphs.
The Third Objective • “Ability to write clearly, accurately and effectively for a specified purpose or audience., also known as directed writing.” • It means that it is an ability to create a text from an author with the same style, choice of words, tone, how the sentences are structured, etc.
