Research Focus – Dr. Zara Ultrasound and Optical Imaging • My primary area of research focus is instrumentation design and development for ultrasound and optical imaging • These techniques can be used to diagnose skin and GI tract cancers, and also used to view arterial plaques and arterial stent placements • May be able to reduce the number of surgeries and biopsies required for patients
Research Focus – Dr. Zara • Work involves computer modeling, assembling prototype devices, and testing them in suitable test phantoms, and eventually patients • Also work in applications of IC fabrication (MEMS devices) to medical devices
What can you do with a BME degree? There are two primary options for a graduate with a bachelors degree in biomedical engineering 1. Go get a job. Pursue a career in industry 2. More schooling. Pursue and advanced degree
Careers in BME • By combining biology and medicine with engineering, biomedical engineers develop devices and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems. • Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, on the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals. • Biomedical engineers also design devices used in various medical procedures, such as the computers used to analyze blood or the laser systems used in corrective eye surgery. They develop artificial organs, imaging systems such as ultrasound, and devices for automating insulin injections or controlling body functions.
Careers in BME • There are a wide variety of opportunities available – The field is expanding and is expected to continue to do so • According to Labor Department The number of biomedical engineering jobs will increase by 31.4 percent through 2010 Overall job growth will average 15.2 percent through the end of the decade, Overall engineering jobs will grow by 9.4 percent.
Careers in BME • Rapid rise in BME jobs linked to 1) An aging U.S. population (baby boomers) 2) An increasing demand for improved medical devices and systems 3) Demand for reduced healthcare costs and less invasive procedures 4) Specific growth areas cited in the report included computer-assisted surgery, cellular and tissue engineering, rehabilitation, and orthopedic engineering.
Specific BME Career Paths • University Professor • Work at government agencies, NIH, FDA, NIST • Work in industry developing, building and testing new medical instruments • Work in private research laboratories • Use broad knowledge of engineering and biology in other applicable areas
Advanced Degrees • Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering and other related areas – more than 100 universities have programs in biomedical engineering – many of these offer advanced degrees in the various specialty areas of biomedical engineering • M.D. degree – a BME degree may help to differentiate an applicant from other students. • Combined M.D./Ph.D. degree – Can research and also practice medicine, often funded by university programs
