Teaching For Learning Overview • #1 : School media program empowers learners by providing opportunities for using technology and collaborative partnerships with other students and faculty. • #2 : School media program provide students with collaborative learning experiences that are authentic and weave together content-arae goals and information literacy.

  5. Teaching For Learning Overview • #3: School media program presents information through a variety of approaches. Technology is provided for students to help them comprehend information and produce new information. • #4: The school media program uses assessment and planning to help improve our programs and increase student achievement.

  6. Teaching For Learning Overview • #5 : The school library media program helps students improve reading skills and broaden their knowledge base.

  7. Our district’s LMS keeps abreast of reading strategy by: • Attending workshops like Peggy Sharp’s What’s New in Children’s Literature to gain knowledge of newly published books and how to use them in connection with our curriculum. • We use online source Titlewave to research book reviews that help us order quality books, DVDs, ebooks, and audiobooks that our students will be interested in reading • The district subscribes to School Library Journal, which contains articles that are helpful to running school libraries. The magazine gives reviews on books, DVDs and other multimedia. • Spanish reading books and materials for the district’s Dual Language have been purchased through the library’s budget. This allows both teachers and the LMS to use the materials to provide reading materials not only for students in the program but also for bilingual students.

  8. Our district’s LMS promotes and motivates readers by: • Developing and presenting lessons to expose students to other cultures and their celebrations’ such as Diwali, Ramadan, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, and Christmas. By doing this the LMS exposes readers to cultures of other students encouraging to better understand their schoolmates through reading. • Students in 2nd and 3rd grades are taught by the LMS on how to use the district’s computer Destiny Catalog System. Through these lessons they are taught how look up books, find the call numbers, and locate the books on the shelves. Students enjoy helping one another in locating books. • The LMS teaches students how to read and write book reviews. The students are then expected to write one review of their own, on books from the library that they have read. The LMS does encourage students to write more reviews throughout the year. These are displayed throughout the library for a time, then they are put into a binder for others who are looking for a good book to use. Many students love doing these reviews and seeing their reviews displayed.

  9. Other ways the LMS promotes reading: • Participates in the Illinois School Library Media Assoc. (ISLMA) Monarch Book Choice program. By reading nominated books to students. 2B* • Provide additional books about subject & author that go along with featured Monarch book. 2B • Book talks • Directing students to books they may like. 2B • Take recommendations by students and teachers for books. 2B* • Purchasing books requested by students and teachers 2B* • Recommend books to teachers as read-a-louds to complement lessons.--Signs are place at ends of bookshelves that indicate the books can be found on that side of the shelf. • Story area is open with a colorful “Dewey Decimal rug. 2E • Guided reading books for teachers are in leveled order and clearly labeled. 2E • The LMS continues to work on upgrading and updating the library collection of materials as the budget allows in order to meet the needs of our 21st century learners.
