How To Set Up EndNotes For Pace DPS Dissertation • When first starting EndNote, “create” a new EndNote library_ I used “Dissertation.enl” • Make a copy of “IEEE” ens • by going into C;\Program Files\Endnotex1\Styles\ • rename the copy to something like “PaceDPS.ens” • use this as the “PaceDPS” style format

  14. EndNote vs LaTeX/BibTeX • “BibTeX is bibliographic software for use with the scientific document preparation system LaTeX. It is used to take data from a bibliographic database (called a .bib file) and stylistic information from a bibliography style file (called a .bst file) to produce a formatted bibliography called a .bbl file, which LaTeX then reads.” • “The procedure is analogous to Endnote taking data from an endnote library (a .enl file) and stylistic information from an endnote style file (a .ens file) to produce a formatted bibliography for Word.” http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/eresources/endnote/bibtex/

Pros And Cons Of LaTeX/BibTeX Pros • The logic, and power, of it makes it infinitely preferable to Word if you’re doing things more complicated than a one page letter. • It’s a mark-up language, so not What You See Is What You Get (like MS Word), but more What You See Is What You Want. i.e. You compose in plain text, then view in another. • Latex does automatic inclusion of citations (ie in line mentions) and references (ie the compiled list at the end) with bibtex. • Free [3] • Produces professionally typeset and well structured documents [3,5] Cons • You need to compile your document a couple of times before you get a good output. This is to do with Latex needing a couple of passes through to pick up all the cross-references, page boundaries etc (or something). • Although bibtex is powerful and comes with lots of tools (one, two) available, I can’t find a nice front end with which to manage my references. So although i’m going to use it (have to use it) to put references in Latex documents, I’m going to keep using endnote to manage my references. How hard can it be to get Endnote to export properly? Where Can I Get EndNotes (True as of March 03, 2008) • If you purchase directly from EndNotes, you will be asked to pay between $250 to $300 for the "non student" version. • Go here to purchase http://www.endnote.com/ • I however found this "online academic superstore" which allows you to purchase the same copy as above, but the student edition for $115. You will need to provide proof that you are a registered student. • Search here for EndNotes http://www.academicsuperstore.com/ • Dr Tappert: If you google "endnote academic" or "endnote student" you will find prices close to $100, e.g. • http://www.amazon.com/s?search-alias=software&field-keywords=endnote%20student&lposid=u7-6292975-1,C,1651 I was on University of Pennsylvania's campus late last week and verified that the difference between the non student version and the student version is the cost.
