How can both myself and my team become more enterprising? Without putting the school at risk
What is enterprise? • We often use the word enterprise to describe a business. • In this instance then enterprise is being used to describe a new project or idea which requires energy and enthusiasm to drive it forward. • Enterprise therefore in this work is an activity or project which can benefit the school. • The aim of such activities is to help the school move forward. • This can be about increasing profits, becoming more stable, relying less on loans, grants or funding and growing into a more sustainable school. • Much of the work around enterprise within organisations is referred to as intrapreneurship.
If your schools is constantly looking for ways to grow and move forward, to increase income and levels of service. In addition, if your school is struggling to find new ways of growing, providing more for less, saving on costs and becoming more stable to ensure their future is secure. Developing a more collaborative relationship with your staff where they really engage with your school could be a solution? “Your staff members can help your school to grow, whilst feeling valued and appreciated?” Enterprise in schools?
Much of the research, work and development around enterprise and staff engagement is referred to as intrapreneurship Intrapreneurship is “taking on responsibility for activities which are innovative in any way and create a new approach” Intrapreneurship
Make risk taking and failure acceptable Give people ownership Give anyone the opportunity and don’t overlook any type of person or job role Support the creation of simple ideas and solutions to everyday issues Celebrate and reward all enterprising effort not just success Encourage collaboration, networking and connecting with stakeholders who are also enterprising Provide opportunities to develop business skills and understand business information Avoid bureaucracy and hierarchical barriers Provide a structure for people to access to move ideas forward (resources) Create an environment which encourages staff engagement How can you encourage intrapreneurs?
Encouraging staff • Demonstrate this is the way forward for your school • Show you are looking for staff with more varied skills • Encourage staff to be more flexible • Support a growth mind-set • Help them understand the school’s vision for the future and how enterprise fits into that
