  2. Network Overview

The Wide Area Network (WAN) • Main Distribution Framework (MDF) • ISP vendor is JNR Electronics which provides a 20 Mbps (Mega bit per second) Internet feed provided through a Motorola Orthogon Microwave point-to-point connection. Information received will follow a path through a Cisco ASA firewall, into a St. Bernard iPrism I-3100 inline content filter then through a Cisco 3825 Router which receives information from two buildings connected through a T1. Before incoming data leaves the MDF it goes through a Cisco Catalyst 3550 with fiber core which distributes the information to the correct building. All fiber is multimode for shorter distances. MDF

  5. The Local Area Network (LAN) • All LAN’s are connected to the district MDF through either T1 connections, wireless connection or fiber optic cable • The T1’s have a 1.5 Mbps capacity, the wireless connection is 300 Mbps with fiber having a 1 Gbps

  6. Individual LAN’s • Within each building is a Cisco 3560 Layer 3 switch which serves as the building core • This allows for each node (client machine, printer, etc.) in the building to connect back to the WAN

  7. Servers • Servers have their own connection to the WAN. • All servers are also connected to a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) which protect the servers in the event of a power outage. UPS

Types of Servers • Email • IGPRO - Gradebook • ParentConnect • Automatic Update • Student Information System – SASI • Waterford Early Learning • Payroll • Windows Active Directory Domain Controllers • DNS Server • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) • Website • File Servers • IT Department • All The Right Type - ATRT • And other various used for storage and administrative tasks

Number of Nodes • Within the last year the district has cut the number of servers from 60 to 44 by replacing outdated servers with newer technology which has increased storage capacity. • The district also has approximately 650 nodes; this includes lab computers, teacher computers, printers and various other peripheral hardware.

  10. Summary • The network is a critical part of the district. It allows sharing of information, access to student learning programs, storage of data, access to teacher programs such as gradebook and attendance, managerial and business applications, location of district websites including online tutorials and Intranet and allows parents to connect to teachers as well as staying up to date on student progress.
