Arthroplasty, commonly known as a knee replacement is a surgical procedure wherein the damaged joint surface of the knee is removed and replaced by metal implants. During the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon cuts down the damaged bone and cartilage from the shinbone, thighbone, and kneecap and the complete structure is replaced with an artificial knee joint called knee prosthesis and it is usually manufactured with metal, polymers or plastic. Knee replacement surgery is usually performed on patients suffering from arthritis, injury, or some other joint disease or trauma, after years of enduring knee pain followed by limited mobility. Total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is among the most common joint surgeries in the world. And India, a country of 1.2 billion people has a significant knee arthritis population. More than 15 crore Indians suffer from knee problems, out of which about 4 crores need a total knee replacement. Knee replacement can be of the following types depending upon the condition to be treated: Total Knee Replacement - This surgery deals in replacing the thigh bone and shin bone. Both the bones combine to form the knee joint. Surgeons suggest for Total Knee Replacement when neither thigh bone nor the shin bone is in proper function. After the Total Knee Replacement, the patient can sway back to the original condition.
Partial Knee Replacement – This surgery is productive for patients who have strong Knee ligaments. For performing this surgery, the doctor replaces only one part of the knee. It can either be the innermost or outside layer. The reason for the same is that only a part of your knee is damaged and not the complete knee. Kneecap Replacement – In this condition, the doctor tends to replace the under-surface of the Kneecap. But this surgery is not advisable by most of the doctors as the success rate of this surgery is comparatively low than the total knee replacement surgery. Revision Knee Replacement – This surgery is needed when the patient is going through some severe arthritis after knee replacement surgery. An Orthopaedician may also perform a Revision Surgery in case of failure of a previous knee replacement surgery. India is a home for highly experienced orthopaedists and surgeons who are taking care of millions of patients every year to deal with knee-related issues. There is a 90% success rate in this surgery. Depending upon the implants used, the artificial knee joint can last up to 20 years. However, some patients do not face any complications even 30 years after the surgery. The doctors in India are well versed with advanced treatments and improvised techniques required for providing complete health care solutions to the patients, yet the unmet demand is huge. With an average cost ranging from Rs 1.5 lakhs to Rs 2.4 lakhs, a section of the population remains untreated for the sufferings. However, government policies of cutting down the cost of basic implants by 65 %, which is a drastic decrease in price, the procedure now has become more affordable. Also, the cost of post-operative care and rehabilitation in the hospital is considerably lower in India as compared to other countries. It can take up to 3 months to recover completely from a knee replacement surgical procedure. Patients can normally drive again after 4 to 6 weeks, and return to work after 6 to 8 weeks. Physical therapy may be provided for 3 months. Patients must comply with the instructions given by doctors, nurses and the physical therapist for a normal and active life post-surgery.
