  2. This workshop will provide you with an opportunity to explore and discuss in an informal but structured manner how your own attitudes, behaviour and use of language can effect colleagues and the wider community

Objectives • By the end of the day you will: • Understand which groups in society are most vulnerable to stereotyping, and how this can lead to prejudice and discrimination. • Have an awareness of current legislation supporting equality and diversity in the workplace. • Positive measures to address under-representation in the workplace. • Identify the impact of bullying and harassment in the workplace.

  4. Equality and Diversity • Equality – valuing all individuals and offering them the same opportunity to reach their potential in employment, or to access a service • Diversity – difference; recognising that individuals do have differences and seeing the value in those differences

  5. Society consists of many diverse individuals and groups, and the diversity of our communities is an asset to the borough • We have a moral and legal responsibility to promote equal opportunities • Not only for staff but for clients/customers who participate or are involved in activities

  6. Equality Act 2010 Came into force on 1st October 2010. The Act is a framework of protection for people discriminated against because they are perceived to have, or are associated with someone who has, a protected characteristic. What characteristics are protected? Age Disability Gender reassignment Race Sex Marriage/civil partnership Religion/belief Sexual orientation Pregnancy/maternity

Offensive songs, remarks, jokes, emails or gestures • Display of offensive posters, publications and graffiti • Unwanted physical contact or advances • Offensive remarks about a person’s dress or appearance • Offensive remarks about a person’s race, gender, marital status, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender identity or age • Shouting abusive or intimidating language • Spreading malicious rumours, allegations or gossip

Excluding, marginalising or ignoring someone • Intrusion by pestering, spying or stalking • Copying memos that are critical about someone to others who do not need to know • Deliberately undermining a competent worker by overloading/taking credit their work/ or constant criticism • Removing areas of responsibility and imposing menial tasks • Cyber-bullying: that is, the sending or posting of harmful, cruel or offensive text or images by email, internet, social networking websites or other digital communication devices
