  1. Research and KE Opportunities 2011-15 IMPAKT programme (October 2011); SPA Research/KE programme; Small Grant Competition; Practitioner Fellowships; Opportunities for Masters/PhD students; Analysis and evaluation of police reform

Improving Police Action through Knowledge Transfer (IMPAKT) Programme Purpose Support to undertake knowledge transfer/exchange and impact generating activities in partnership with the Scottish police service. Focus on promoting the application of policing research to address one or more of the priorities outlined in the Scottish Policing Assessment and should help to facilitate the co-production and application of knowledge. This Programme is not designed to fund new research but is for new knowledge exchange and impact generating activity

IMPAKT: Guidance on Submitting Proposals Project proposals to be demand driven (i.e. aligned with the priorities identified in the Scottish Policing Assessment) and collaborative (i.e with clearly identified partners in the Scottish police service). Projects which also involve collaboration between Scottish HEIs are particularly welcome. The type of KTE activity may include a combination of workshops, seminars, training packages, web-based resources etc. Proposals should be costed on a non-FEC basis and projects can be up to one year duration.

  4. IMPAKT: Guidance on Submitting Proposals ACPOS Strategic Development Unit will help facilitate contact with relevant people within Scottish police service; Maximum funding available for individual bids c. £20K costed on a non-FEC basis; Timetable: formal call for proposals by end of October, submission by mid-January.

IMPAKT: summary of key elements Responsive to ACPOS strategic needs in order to maximise impact Inclusive - draw on breadth of experience/skills from across Scotland/UK/internationally Connected - cross institutional bids particularly welcomed Creative - use and development of innovative KTE ideas REF-orientated – use in the development of REF narratives

  6. SPA Research/KE programme First call for specific research projects/KE activity linked to Scottish Policing Assessment (April/May 2012); These projects will take a variety of forms, from ‘rapid evidence assessments’ to medium and longer term research.

  7. Small Grant Competition & Practitioner Fellowships Continuing support for a Small Grant Competition (up to £3K); Continuing support for Practitioner Fellowships (with funding available to support research activity and dissemination of findings).

  8. Opportunities for Masters and PhD students Identification of topics where police will help facilitate access to people/data; ‘User’ support in applications for funding of studentships; Potential for co-supervision arrangements (following ESRC CASE model).

  9. Analysis & Evaluation of Police Reform:Opportunities for SIPR Informing discussions of how policing might be organised and delivered (Critical Issues in Policing Seminar Programme); Coordinating work around analysis and evaluation ( Researching Police Reform Working Group) Supporting research into the impacts of reform: How will citizens experience and perceive local policing? What is the impact on the capacity and effectiveness of the police? Will the reforms deliver the substantial financial savings? How will the new arrangements for governance and accountability work?; How will the reforms impact on those working in police organisations in terms of careers, roles and responsibilities, and professional development? What can Scotland learn from police reform programmes in other countries?
