  1. ASAP – RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND DIRECTIONS

  2. Contents • Generic opportunities • Individual profiles • Skills on offer

  3. Generic opportunities(1) • ESRC – quant training (TEACHING) - Development of undergrad curricula - International benchmarking - Support for MA courses in GIS+ • ESRC - ‘Social Stability & Exclusion’ - ‘Lifecourse, lifestyle & health’ DFID/ESRC ‘International poverty reduction’ (data: SE conds to allieviate poverty: 13th July)

  4. Generic Opportunties(2) • ESRC/AHRC – ‘Ethnicity, religion & related topics’ • ESRC/NERC – ‘Environment and human health’ • Future Cities (leader; uni. Support; ESRC centres bid?) • EPSRC – ‘Novel computation’ ‘Complexity Science’

  5. Generic Opportunties(3) • Joseph Rowntree: ‘Poverty and disadvantage’; ‘Housing & neighbourhoods’ (2003-2006 calls include: alcohol abuse; governance of public services; immigration and inclusion, independent living)

  6. Generic Opportunities (4) • Consultancy: Imaginating (MCC/MB) Pete Boden • Personpower • Marketing • Professionalism

  7. Phil • EPSRC (Water New Developments) I am a co-investigator with Adrian McDonald. It runs until 31 March 2007. Adrian is hoping to bid for further EPSRC funds beyond that date. • GLA/ESRC New Migrant Databank. I hope to submit a tender for this initiative, for which Peter Boden and I did the feasibility study Dec 05-Feb06. It is awaiting funding by GLA and other bodies.

  8. Mark • I feel that we should be trying to develop an ESRC Research Centre bid in the ‘Future Cities’ area • Moses could provide an excellent platform for research and policy applications – will be the first time that a national demographic simulation has been available at anything like this detail.

  9. John S. • Currently drafting communications/dissemination strategy for UPTAP to secure £50K of ESRC funding set aside for this purpose • Project to develop of version of WICID for GRO Scotland (with ODW) • Interested in any research opportunities or consultancies involving analysis of interaction data sets • Apply for £50K Small Research Grant for UPTAP project on ‘Ethnicity, immigration and internal migration: patterns and linkages’ (Funding has been set aside by ESRC for this). Need to find an appropriate young or mid-career researcher interested in 12 month fellowship. • Apply for an innovation project under the Census Programme (probably in January 2007) to expand CIDER to provide various non-census interaction data sets (with ODW)

  10. Andy • EPSRC Crime and fuzzy GIS proposal - hopefully for a research fellow to look at manipulating fuzzy entities. (Summer 2006) • Just put in with Carver: AHRC Landscape and Environment bid - to look at the relationship between art, language and landscape understanding; the ossification of landscapes within time periods.

  11. Alison • Australian - UK ESRC Collaboration: Linda See, Alison H and Chris Pettit (RMIT) • “Understanding Rural Landscapes through Agent-Based Modelling and 3-D Visualisation” (June -06). • EPSRC have IDEAS factories - funding worth up to £1.45million - call is out for ideas on complexity. • NERC: Doomsday forecasting --> would like to apply for up to 1million with researchers here and in Earth and Env. Aim to submit in Dec. early spring of next year.

  12. Linda • Agent-based modelling of crime – seeing Leeds Community Safety Partnership in May • Agent-based modelling of land use – putting in grant with Alison H • Short courses – development and teaching via Dave Unwin

  13. Gordon • Commercialising services in areas of urban diffuse pollution mapping and industrial water demand forecasting (with Martin Clarke) • Keen to work with people who can provide improved spatial/temporal/functional information describing basic elements of urban systems (e.g. people, land use), now and predictively for the future, and who would be interested in exploring opportunities for exploiting that information in forecasting urban environmental / sustainability futures.

  14. Graham • NRPI – with Food Nutrition Group (£1m – post-doc in geography) • Welcome Foundation (Geography and obesity in schools: quant and qualitative approach: 2 post-docs: 0.5k) • Health and food deserts (Steve Cummings: one post-doc: 0.25k) • International retailing

  15. New collaborations? • Microsimulation/agent-based models • Mixed micro/macro approaches • GA modelling in spatial int. models • E-Science/Complexity • Water/health/energy/education/social policy/forecasting/ - link to policy agenda

  16. Louise • Integrate and apply my EO research expertise within Applied Spatial Analysis research group activities; for example provision of EO expertise to validate microsimulation household data; and within Ecology research activities, for example provision of impervious surface data and analysis for hydrological and land use models. In general, I can provide expertise in spatial analysis, GIS, EO and image processing.

  17. Helen RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES SOUGHT AUGUST 06 ONWARDS: • GIS applications in human or physical geography • Spatial decision support • Digital mapping • Population geography/ small area change over time/geographical harmonisation • Census data analysis • E-learning material development

  18. Cont… • Patrick Sim: Sustainability (energy, water) Scenario Forecasting • John Parsons More modelling and software development • Andy Turner Continuation of MOSES

  19. Current Postgrads • Dianna Smith: health inequalities with particular regards to area/contextual effects on health and research. I'd like to either extend the research on diabetes or go into some of the cancers we know are associated with diet, or perhaps cardiovascular disease. • Kirk Harland: In the future I am hoping to continue work on predictive modelling techniques possibly looking into agent based systems and management of geographic information. • Mel Tomintz, Kim Proctor, Gemma Hobson - health
