  2. Wildlife Management • On most farms, it is usually a by-product of the family operation.

  3. Wildlife on the Farm • Suitable habitat and food are essential to increase the number of wildlife on a farm. • To improve habitat, brush piles might be left when harvesting wood lots to provide shelter and cover for the protection of wildlife.. • To improve food supply, farmers might leave crop residue standing.

  4. Proper Wildlife Management • Includes managed hunting & fishing. • Removes excess wildlife that would otherwise be lost due to natural causes. • Prevents overpopulation and eventual decreased wildlife population which would result from…. • Malnutrition • Disease • Reduction in reproduction

  5. Carrying Capacity • The number of wildlife each habitat can support throughout the year. • Managed hunting & fishing will help maintain the proper carrying capacity. • More wildlife than the habitat can support will result in problems for wildlife and habitat.

  6. Carrying Capacity • Wildlife are affected by malnutrition, disease, and a reduction in the reproduction cycle. • Habitat quality goes down. • Water quality of a stream with a carrying capacity of 20 fish will decrease if 50 fish are in the stream.

  7. Careers

  8. Ecologists • Study the effects of the environment on animal life.

  9. Game Warden (Wildlife Officer) • Enforces hunting & fishing regulations as a means of wildlife management. • Wildlife officers should enjoy working outdoors. • Requires special training & often a college degree.

  10. Game Warden (Wildlife Officer) • In North Carolina, the wildlife officer is a government employee under the direction of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.

  11. NC Wildlife Commission • The agency responsible for controlling the harvest of wildlife.

  12. Wildlife Biologist • Do research on habitat & wildlife as part of a career in natural resources. • Advise government agencies in establishing fish/game laws and habitat improvement programs. • Usually requires a minimum of a Master’s Degree.
