  2. Mangais the Japanese word for comic book, or Graphic Novel. In English it means Japanese Comic Books. When a Manga book becomes popular, the author may want to carry on the story, so some Manga series can contain up to thirty volumes. Manga books are targeted for all age groups and cover a wide range of genres. They are quite different from Western comics which are based around superhero themes. Manga is sometimes mistakenly called “Anime”, the Japanese word for animated cartoons.

  3. Many people think that Manga and Anime are the same thing, or that they are two different styles of Japanese cartoons. However, “Anime” means animated cartoons, usually referring to a television series or an animated film, and “Manga” means comic book. When a Manga series becomes popular, it is often adapted into an Anime series or film so that people can watch it as well as read it.

  4. Manga developed from a mixture of Ukiyo-e and Western art movements, and took its current form shortly after World War II. • When the United States of America began trading with Japan, Japan tried to modernise itself. They imported Western artists to teach students more drawing techniques. • Manga as people know it in the 20th and 21st centuries only came into being after Dr.Osamu Tezuka, widely acknowledged to be the father of story-based Manga, became popular. • Nowadays Manga is popular worldwide.

  5. Dr. Osamu Tezuka was born on the 3rd of November 1928. • He is known as “the father of Manga” or “the Walt Disney of Japan.” • He invented the distinctive "large eyes" style of Manga and anime. • He began his career as a Manga creator while he was at university studying to become a doctor. • He is the creator of Astro Boy, Princess Knight, Phoenix and Kimba the White Lion.

  6. Big, expressive eyes (Female eyes are usually bigger than male eyes.) • Tiny noses and mouths. • Hair which is made up of many tiny strands. • Thin bodies and limbs.

  7. Here are a few basic Manga and Anime expressions: • Sweat drops, usually drawn on the head, indicate bewilderment and nervousness. • Throbbing veins, usually depicted as a cruciform on the upper head indicates anger or irritation. • Hatchings on the cheek represents blushing. • A white cross-shaped bandage symbol indicates pain. • A character suddenly falling onto the floor is a humorous reaction to something ironic happening.

  8. “Chibi” is a particular style of Manga that is growing extremely popular around the world. • In Japanese, Chibi is a word used to describe a short person or a child. • A Chibi drawing is a baby or a toddler-like version of an original Manga character. • Chibis are usually very cute and have enormous eyes. They also tend not to have any fingers or look as if they are wearing mittens. Their feet are also quite small and look like pointed ballerina feet.
