Background • In January 2008 JISC began its “Business & Community Engagement Programme” to support institutions in their strategic management of relationships with external partners and clients • It was driven by the Government's agenda to build the knowledge economy, and in response to a growing understanding that the emerging profession of ‘Knowledge Transfer’was fragmented and lacking in agreed frameworks for skills assessments and standards

  4. Business & Community Engagement • BCE involves: • Innovation and knowledge exchange • Strategic partnerships • Workforce development and lifelong learning • Public and community engagement • Employer engagement • External Service provision and delivery

Examples of Institutional BCE Activities • Consultancy services • Collaborative research; Contract research • Start-up companies and spin-off companies • Alumni services • CPD and training service • Workforce development services; Work-based learning; Work placements • Lifelong learning • Enterprise facilities, activities and education • Incubation facilities and services • Licensing of content and knowledge assets • Social entrepreneurship/corporate social responsibility

Project Outputs • Training Needs Analysis of BCE practitioners (Workshops, Surveys & 30 face-to-face Interviews were held) • Investigation into appropriate CPD frameworks: e.g. AURIL • Mapping of JISC Advance services, resources, events and activities against framework (Other resources and frameworks will be considered and added later where appropriate) • Online profiling tool to allow BCE practitioners to match areas of potential development against available resources • Series of workshops to promote/develop the above

Outputs from Training Needs Analysis • BCE practitioners work in a wide range of roles & activities • Training resources are both needed & wanted • No clear pattern of specific needs but survey suggested some: • Data protection/IPR • Marketing & communication • Best practice • E-learning • Engagement/collaboration tools

Key Role - Manage Operations within a Legal Context • 6. Key Role - Problem Solve and Manage the Decision Making Process • 7. Key Role - Provide and be a Source of Leadership • 8. Key Role - Provide Leadership at the Senior Management Level

  9. Where we are with the Development • Based on the Netskills existing iSkills tool • Mapping of existing resources is well underway • In-house Alpha User Testing completed • Some Beta Test sites identified • On schedule for V1 release end June 2010
