  4. Answers • At least 65 million years ago, forces on our planet’s surface caused South America and Africa to move apart, forming the Southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. • 50 countries • North Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central and Southern Africa • North Africa is marked by rocky mountains and its home to the Sahara desert, West Africa is the continents most populated region, consists of grasslands, East Africa has many mountains and a few plateaus, and Central and Southern Africa is flat or rolling grassland. This region also has thick rain forests, mountains, and swamps, thick rain forests, mountains, and swamps • Africa is often called the plateau continent because much of the continent is made up of raised mostly level areas of land that drop off sharply near the sea. Much of this land has a high elevation. • Mount Kilimanjaro is a major landform in East Africa. • The rivers are broken in places by large waterfalls or steep rapids and due to these obstacles makes it impossible for ships to sail the whole way between Africa’s interior and the sea. • The three most important rivers in Africa are the Nile River, The Congo River, and the Niger River. • Because due to frequent flooding deposited rich soil which enable farmers to plant their crops matching the flood cycle of the river.
