  2. Introduction The project work my group is doing is about the geographical location of Singapore. My group members consists of : Christopher Chew (2)‏ See Yongsong (20)‏ Jaron Yong (31)‏

  3. Where is Singapore? • Located in South-East Asia • South of Malaysia,north of Indonesia • Geographical coordinates are 1 22N,103 48E • Focal point of Southeast Asian sea route • Separated from Malaysia and Indonesia by the Johor Straits and the Singapore Straits

  4. Why must Indian/Chinese traders travel by sea to China/India??? • Traders cannot travel by land from China to India or vice versa. • Between the 2 countries, there is a mountain range called the Himalayas. • The tallest mountain in the Himalayas is Mount Everest, which is also the tallest mountain in the world at 8848m. • Horses carrying goods cannot travel through the mountain range.

  7. Why did the British need a 3rd port? • Before the discovery of Singapore, the British controlled only 2 ports, Penang and Bencoolen (now Bengkulu). • Both ports are too far from the main trading area. • The Dutch monopolised trade in South East Asia as they controlled Malacca.

  10. Why Raffles chose Singapore as a port due to its location? Singapore location was along the trade route between India and China. If they could control Singapore,the British can break the Dutch monopoly and be able to trade their goods with China. Due to Singapore's location,it has abundant rain falls that brings fresh water which are needed by traders. It has food too. It also has wood that traders need when repairing broken boats.

  11. Advantages of Singapore's Location • Protected from tsunamis by Indonesian islands • Has deep waters • Has abundant rainfall • Has a warm, tropical climate • Has many coral reefs • Has a lot of shelter • Has timber to repair ships

  12. Disadvantages of Singapore’s Location • Near the Straits of Melaka where they are many pirates lurking • Limited fresh water resources • Limited land area

  13. From 2004 to 2009, Singapore has been the world’s busiest port. • It has 67 berths • It was constructed in 1819

  14. How Singapore location contribute to PSA’s success PSA’s reputation is very good. Why is it able to uphold its reputable ship company name? That is because Singapore is located along major shipping routes, thus more ships will stop by Singapore.

  15. How Singapore location help it in its nation building Singapore is located major trades thus boosting its trade. Singapore location make it accessible to other places by air and sea transport. Singapore location allows easy access to other Asian premier markets.

  16. How Singapore location help itself now ? • Due to Singapore strategic location,many travellors would stop by Singapore before continuing their journey thus improving the economy and tourism industry in Singapore

  17. How Singapore location will help it in the future? China plans to build railway all over Asia and Europe and Singapore will be the first station. This way, more travellers who cannot afford air travel over huge areas can take the bullet train to Singapore before taking a short air flight to their destination. Adapted from: The Straits Times

  18. Reflections Jaron: I have learnt the importance of Singapore's geographical location. Singapore's location has helped Singapore in many ways in the past, present and somewhat also in the future. Christopher: I have learnt the advantage and disadvantage of Singapore's location. I have also learnt how to find out if something is of grater advantage by looking at its advantage and disadvantages. If there are more advantages than disadvantages, then the item is of grater advantage, vice-versa. Yong Song: From this presentation , I have learnt that if it was not of Singapore strategic location, we would not have today. I have also learnt more about companies that benefitted from Singapore's location. One of them include PSA.PSA owe its reputable name to Singapore location because if it had not been Singapore's location, PSA could not be so reputable internationally today
