  4. The International Baccalaureate Programmes There are 3 distinct programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization: • The Primary Years Programme (K-7) • The Middle Years Programme (8/9/10) • The Diploma Programme (11-12)

IB Mission Statement: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences can also be right.

MYP 3 Fundamental Concepts • Holistic Learning • Educating the whole child beyond just the ‘academic subjects’ and linking curriculum to the “real world” • Intercultural Awareness • Understanding your own culture and that there are other cultures that have different views • Communication • Clearly being able to express yourself in many ways and in more than one language

Distributed Learning: What is It? • alternate way to complete core academic courses and electives at the grade 10, 11 and 12 levels • BC Ministry of Education Curriculum, courses leading to graduation • teacher and student interaction can be both “online” and “blended” • continuous entry/self-paced or cohorts • learning with a technology focus: using online tools

Benefits of Online Learning • flexible: self-paced, anytime, anywhere learning • frees up student timetable to enroll in additional classes • supports elite athlete’s training schedules or part-time work schedules • utilizes 21st century learning skills (technology) • preparation for online course delivery options in post-secondary and trades programs

  23. DL Centre Model The DL Centre is a computer lab, classroom or work space for students to meet with DL teachers for face to face interaction. Main DL Centre: Mountainside Secondary • DL Centre opened daily, until 6:00 • test invigilation,tutorial support, tech support Satellite DL Centres (at each Secondary School) • DL Centre hours posted on school website • test invigilation, tutorial support, tech support

Registration • meet with your grade counsellor to determine if DL is right for you • forms available from grade counsellor, or online at nvsd44.ca---distributed learning-submit forms to NVDLS • forms will be processed and a login and password sent out in late August/early September • options for DL Summer Session (July and August) will be available in late April • questions? Regarding online… • Planning 10 is the only course students may take online in Grade 10 without affecting their MYP certificate • Students who register online need to know that we do not hold a seat for the student here in the classroom. • Registration for Planning 10 online is due April 24th

  38. In Order to Graduate… LOOKING AHEAD • Students need 80 credits to graduate • Students begin earning credits in Grade 10 SO…if a student fails a course in grade 9 it is very important to take this course again during summer school to earn the correct number of credits for graduation.
