Recommendations and Future Plans for ZEUS Collaboration and Data Preservation

The PRC71 meeting on April 29, 2011, led by Aharon Levy, discussed urgent recommendations for ZEUS, focusing on data preservation and the need for efficient collaboration with HERA experiments. With increased common NTuple usage, future analyses will rely heavily on data preservation strategies aimed at long-term usage. The structure of ZEUS includes seniors, post-docs, and students, with an emphasis on the importance of continued support from DESY. Leadership transitions and proposals for future collaboration structures were also outlined, leading to enhanced strategic planning for ongoing physics analyses.

  1. PRC- closed session: ZEUS Friday, April 29, 2011 Aharon Levy, PRC71 (closed)

  2. Recommendations of PRC 70 “The PRC requests from ZEUS to converge rapidly on a concrete plan and specify additional resource requests. The PRC expects a solution to be found in close collaboration between the ZEUS and DESY managements and the participating ZEUS institutes. “ Done. Common NTUPLE (CN) use was doubled from 30% to >60% in current analyses. By end of 2011, all analyses will be done on CN. Extension of CN project to 2012 – need 2.5 FTE for 2012. Solution found by close collaboration with the DESY management (regular monthly meetings) and ZEUS institutes. Aharon Levy, PRC71 (closed)

  3. Recommendations of PRC 70 “The PRC also recommends strong support of the HERA data preservation project and encourages ZEUS to closely collaborate with the other experiments to ensure efficient common procedures in spite of slightly different data preservation philosophies adopted by the HERA experiments. “ Done. Have monthly meeting between H1 and ZEUS managements. Data preservation issues, talks at conferences, common analyses are discussed. Prepared a document with plans and needs for data preservation. Data to be used for next >10 years. ZEUS needs a long-term position for a physicist to take care of all issues connected to data preservation. This person should also be involved in physics analyses of other experiment, like LHC or LC. Aharon Levy, PRC71 (closed)

  4. Structure of ZEUS Present structure of ZEUS: 84 seniors, 17 post-docs, 23 PhD , 26 MSc students. PhD : 13 finish end of 2011, 7 by end of 2012, 1 - end of 2013, 2 finish end of 2014. Expect several new PhD students each year. Many students are from Kiev with the kind support from DESY. Continued support from DESY is essential. Also need to have enough supervisors. Future structure (>2013): Committee, headed by Robert Klanner, to suggest a future structure of the collaboration. A proposal should be discussed at the September ZEUS Collaboration meeting. Aharon Levy, PRC71 (closed)

  5. Next Physics Chairs The next two Physics Chairs of ZEUS (after summer 2011) will be Iris Abt Olaf Behnke Aharon Levy, PRC71 (closed)
