  1. Getting Started: Offering Alumni Access to Electronic Resources @ Elon U, Belk Library Our alumni are begging!!

  2. Elon University: ~5000 students, undergrad + graduate programs; a very active Endowment Building program.

  3. Commencement! (What? Access is turned off to all my ‘stuff’?)

  4. MUSE Always Allowed Alumni Access “Many institutions have been pleasantly surprised to learn that their MUSE journal subscription does allow access for alumni. The MUSE journals license lists alumni under the list of authorized users. Equally as important, access for alumni is allowed at no additional charge to the subscribing institution. See the Authorized Users section of the MUSE journals license agreement at http://muse.jhu.edu/about/order/license_review.html “ Summer 2011: Project Muse newsletter announces alumni access

  5. “While the Alumni Access Program will officially launch in January 2013, JSTOR will turn on access and waive the Annual Access Fee (AAF) for the remainder of 2012. The Alumni Access participation fee is 10% of the institution’s total AAF. The program is open to eligible higher education institutions worldwide; please contact us for eligibility requirements. Participating schools must support the bifurcation of alumni usage from their main account.” Nov 2012: JSTOR announces Alumni Access program

  6. RefWorks Alumni Program • “Alumni relations is a strategic imperative for nearly all universities. With greater demands and expectations from alumni for increased services after graduation, libraries are becoming increasingly involved with alumni associations and programs. • To help our academic customers offer additional benefits to their alumni, we have transformed the Alumni Program to a standard feature of RefWorks. • All alumni of subscribing academic institutions will have life-long access to RefWorks. Access will continue to be available an institution’s alumni as long as that institution subscribes.” Refworks offers life-long access to alums of subscribed institutions.

  7. Belk Library = clearly time for action!! How to start? Build a team! • Library • IT • Alumni Relations/ University Advancement • Then: Meetings, meetings, meetings!

  8. For the library: • $$$ (but not too much) • Keeping up with contractual changes • Expectation management • No extra costs for Muse, Refworks • A reasonable expense for JSTOR Challenges:

  9. For IT: authentication • Elon provides off-campus log-in through a VPN; all resources are ON or OFF. • Alums do not retain campus log-ins. • For this project, we’ll need to use Shibboleth, which is JSTOR & Muse compliant and allows categories of users. • Our alumni office will develop and manage a database of usable alumni ID numbers Challenges:

  10. For Alumni Relations: the “Roll-Out” • When? Commencement? Homecoming? • How? At alumni receptions? A library reception? Alumni newsletters? Challenges:

  11. We’re still figuring it out. • The actual roll-out…..coming soon. • Learn from Duke!!! • Grow our collection of offerings. • Become savvy about collecting usage stats. • Partner with Alumni Relations to explore more ways to serve our alums. What’s next at Elon ??
