Step 1 • Circle the prepositions: in, out, over, under, behind, after, at, for, etc.
Step 2 • Underline forms of the verb “to be”: is, are, was, were, has been, etc.
Step 3 • Ask “Where’s the action?” “Who Is Kicking Whom?” The answer will uncover the sentence core: Subject, Verb, Object. Put the subject, verb, and object as close as possible to one another.
Step 4 • Put the “Kicking” action in a simple, active verb (not a compound verb).
Step 4 • Start sentences fast by eliminating slow windups such as “It has come to my attention that . . . “ or “What I would like to make clear is . . . “ or “There are .
