ESA and Mars Express archive activities Olivier Witasse Mars Express project scientist
ESA Planetary Science Archive www.rssd.esa.int/psa
Main problems of the ESA archive • Data completeness (raw and calibrated): this has been greatly improved, but it’s not yet ideal. Problems of resources within the PI teams. And ESA manpower sometimes. • Lack of higher-level data: no PI team commitment, lack of resources etc… • Lack of tools for data visualisation and processing (varies from team to team) • Interface issues (should be solved in the near-future hopefully)
Organisation of data workshops for Mars Express • June 2007, May 2008, June 2008, July 2009 • Experiments: HRSC, OMEGA, MARSIS, Radio-science • Feedback: we need to improve the service.
Question? • Raw/calibrated data + software or • Derived data?
Higher-level data in the PSA for Mars Express • HRSC camera Digital Terrain Model • MARSIS Total Electron Content (to be delivered today) • Radio-Science atmospheric vertical profile (under corrections) • MARSIS vertical electron density profiles (under preparation) • Surface global maps (under discussion/preparations) • Atmospheric profiles (under negotiation !)
Next steps for the ESA archive • Improve the ESA PSA archive; • User workshop to be organised in 2010; • Release higher-level data as much as possible; • Tools? • Mars Express atmospheric data: work with Europlanet? • Final objectives: make sure that the data from the ESA planetary missions are being used by the community.
