  2. Acceleration • Is the rate at which velocity changes • Acceleration involves a change in either speed or direction • In science acceleration refers to increasing speed, decreasing speed or changing direction

  3. When is an Object Accelerating? • Any time the speed of an object changes (positive or negative) • Negative acceleration- slowing down or decrease in speed. • Anytime the direction of an object changes • An object continuously change direction without changing speed. Motion around a circular path ( moon) is an example of this

  4. How do you Determine Acceleration? • To determine the acceleration of an object moving in a straight line you must calculate the change in speed per unit of time. • Acceleration= final velocity-initial velocity/ Time

  5. Analyzing Motion • You can use both a speed vs. time graph and a distance vs. time graph to analyze the motion of an accelerating object. • Slanted strait line- acceleration is constant • You can find acceleration by finding the slope of a line. Rise/run • A graph of distance vs time for an accelerating object is curved.
