Order Entry (using Meditech Magic 5.64) • OE being used for Order processing with interfaces to the Lab and Dietary • Various print formats to Departments like Diagnostic Imaging, Bed Allocation and referrals throughout multi disciplines • Customized reports to have orders flow through server as text message to Phones and pagers

  3. Order Entry Blood products for transportation by Pneumatic Tube • If a Porter has to obtain the Lab req. from the unit then walk to the Blood bank to get a product & return, What time can we save? What direct patient transportation could they be doing? How many steps saved? • If a Nurse has to take the req from their unit and walk to the Blood bank & return, What direct patient care could they be doing? What time can we save? How many steps saved? • Can we do this securely? With little to No Risk?

Product Release Request • Created a procedure in OE to request product once Cross match completed • Ease of use, system well understood by frontline staff • Enabled nurses to remain on unit providing care and request product on their timeline of availability • Pneumatic Tube system uses a secure delivery, pass code protected with defined time limit if carrier not picked up by nurse

  7. Blood bank conducted pre-LIVE studies to determine Effects on Blood products using Pneumatic Tube transport including Time and Temperature changes

  9. OE for Physician Entry of Non elective OR Board cases • Surgical Non elective cases are defined into 4 types; • A case emergent < 2 hours • B case within 2 – 12 hours • C case within 12 – 48 hours • D case within 2 – 7 days • Historically tracked by the Charge nurse

Multiple phases to change past practice Step 1Unbury the Charge nurse from paper scraps and post its Step 2 Operating Room developed a paper Booking form for Physicians that could be hand delivered or faxed to the OR team station Step 3 Create an OE screen of the Booking form & teach Super users to help train surgeons *make it easy to use* Step 4 Train Physicians to use Order Entry without calling it OE * stigma related to “Order Entry”*

  13. Simple to access, structured like the booking form developed. Uses a Meditech view Physicians are used to.

  14. Next Phase Super users are currently giving demonstration and one to one instructions to add a case in Meditech. These orders print to the OR team station and are written on “The Board” Move OR Board to LIVE screen using a large monitor or TV.
