LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE projectobjectives Italian Administrationstartedthe AGRIT Agri-Environmental survey (AAEproject) in 2010 with the scope to collectquantitative and especiallyqualitativeinformation concerningagro-environmentaldata (type of crops, type of hedges, landscape elements, soil erosion, etc.), that are not fully detectable by the photo-interpretation during LPIS activity.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE project Information about crop pattern, presence and length of hedgerows or buffer strips along the water elements such as ponds or stream, should play a basic role for the assessment of interaction between agriculture and the environment.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS The AAE projectisbased on the integration of the instrumentsalready in use sincemanyyears (LPIS&AGRIT) Component for surveying the Italianterritory: LPIS-REFRESH Component for the statisticalsurvey: AGRIT New component: AGRIT Agro Environmentalsurvey AGRIT AGRO ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY (AAE) The integration of remote sensing data and groundrecordingenablesthe determination of agri-environmentalindicatorson a Regionalscale. In 2011 the project has covered 3 Regions, Toscana, Marche and Sicilia. -

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS Period of the fieldvisit: september – november 2011 Field survey for: • check the Land Cover/Land Use • detectall linear elements and point(hedgesand rows, stonewalls, streams and trees) • recordsadditionalqualitativeinformation of physicalvariables(Erosion, Irrigation, State of the crops, age of trees/hedges,) fallingwithineachunit of observationintegrating the layers with information.

  8. LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS Sampling units are quadrat portions of territory of size 250x250 m (6,25 ha). Each quadrat is partitioned into polygons defining the land cover. Isulatedtree Stone walls Hedgerows • Enumerators detectsthe ecological structures within the quadrat (hedgerows, tree rows, stone walls, streams and isolated trees) and records (using the Tablet embedded GIS tool) the quantitative and categorical variables associated with these structures.

  12. LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS The project provides the extent estimates for: • arable lands, • permanent crops; • permanent grassland; and the estimates of Environmental variables at regional basis.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS Moreover the following information are provided: • presence of irrigation - irrigated not irrigated (type of irrigation); • presence of erosion and its intensity; • presence of ditches and their length; • presence of terraces; • type of pasture; • type of forest (broadleaved or coniferous) and management.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimation For evaluation of the landscape • The ratio of hedgerow and tree row extent to the UAA extent; • The ratio of the total length of stone walls and ditches to the UAA extent. • Extent of the areas occupied by terraces • Extent of the areas occupied by hedges and rows for each of the four strata determined by the Shannon index of use diversity.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimation For soil management • Extent of the area affected by erosion (at the moment of the survey) for the whole region and in the presence of crops, trees and fodder. • Extent of permanent crops with the inter-row soil grass covered, partially covered, mulched or with bare soil.

The absence of suchspeciesindicates a higherdegree of naturalness.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS • The AAE area survey provides a feasible and statistically sound strategy based on remote sensing data and ground recording. • The ground surveys within selected quadrats enables the collection of quantitative and qualitative information concerning agro-environmental variables. • The repetition of the survey at fixed time gaps will allow a diachronic observation of the study area enabling the monitoring of the environmental transformations.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimates for the evaluation of the RDP in Sicily The AAE surveyhasbeenused in order to achieve in-situ data and verify the existence of significantdifferencesbetweenregionalareasaffected / notaffected by agri-environmentalmeasures of the RDP. The pupose is to provide data and estimates to assess the impact of agri-environmental measures of the Sicilian RDP.

The quadrats (sampling units) are divided into two universes and analysed separately. Quadrats with RDP AEM are then compared with Quadrats without RDP AEM, as - in situations "factual" and "counterfactual" –

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimates for the evaluation of the RDP in Sicily Conservation of biodiversity on farmland and therefore of the "High Nature Value” farmland is a key specific objective of rural development policy, for supporting the Community strategic goal of halting the decline of biodiversity by 2020.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimates for the evaluation of the RDP in Sicily The Impact Indicator no. 5 "Preservation of farmland and forests of high nature value" ("Maintenance of HNV farmland and forestry”) intend to measurechanges in the quantitative and qualitative findings of thesehabitats (areas) in the region, that can be attributed to the RDP interventions.

LAND USE STATISTICS TO ESTIMATE AGRI- ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS AAE estimates for the evaluation of the RDP in Sicily The work is still in progress and the final results may change, because the statistical information refers to the wholeuniverseconsidered and are notyetcompared with the homogeneouszones for each of the variablesconsidered.
