Population distribution • The way in which people are spread across a given area is known as population distribution. Geographers study population distribution patterns at different scales: local, regional, national, and global. • It follows that populations are more or less sparse or dense in different locations, regions and countries. • http://cgz.e2bn.net/e2bn/leas/c99/schools/cgz/accounts/staff/rchambers/GeoBytes/Content%20Generator%20Quizzes/Match%20Up/KS3%20Population%20Terms/KS3Population_terms.swf ONE PLAYER
Human factors • Other human factors include: economic ports, economic industrial areas, areas of tourism and reclamation of land (Dubai)
Population density • Population density is the average number of people per square kilometre. It is a way of measuring population distribution. It shows whether an area is sparsely or densely populated. Population density is calculated using the following formula: • Population density = total population divided by total land area in km2 Population density = total population divided by total land area in km2
areas of high and low population density are unevenly spread across the world, but • the majority of places with high population densities are found in the northern hemisphere • It is important to understand that how densely populated a country is has very little to do with its level of economic development. For example, both Bangladesh and the Japan are very densely populated, but Bangladesh is an LEDC (less economically developed country) and Japan is an MEDC (more economically developed country)
