  1. Chapter 7Verb + Infinitive Construction

  2. Verb + Infinitive- What is the Verb? • The only verb being conjugated is the actual verb being done. • In these sentences only one verb is conjugated. • Really think about the sentence, what it is saying or what you are trying to say.

  3. Verb + Infinitive- What is the Verb? • J’aime parler français. • What is the sentence saying? • Is the speaker actually speaking French at this moment? • No, the speaker is simply saying that he/she likes to speak French. • Don’t forget: The infinitive means “to…”

  4. Verb + Infinitive • The verb conjugated can be either positive: • J’aime jouer au foot. • Or negative: • Je n’aime pas jouer au foot. • In either case, the speaker is not actually playing soccer, just stating a preference for it or against it.

  5. Verb + Infinitive • Aimer is not the only verb we can use. • Préfèrer I prefer • J’aime jouer au basket, mais je préfère jouer au tennis. • Voudrais • Je voudrais voyager. • (I would like to travel.)

  6. Verb + Infinitive • Vouloir (Veux) To want • Je ne veux pas manger. • (I don’t want to eat) • Pouvoir (Peux) To be able to • Je peux travailler. • (I can work)

  7. Verb + Infinitive • Devoir (Dois) Must • Je ne peux pas voyager, je dois travailler. • (I can’t travel, I must work.

  8. Verb + Infinitive Questions • We can also use this construction to form questions. • Est-ce que Is, does, do • Est-ce que tu veux parler espagnol? • Est-ce que tu peux chanter? • Est-ce que tu voudrais voyager?
