About The Student Accommodation Code • Developed in 2006 by UUK and GuildHE to encourage the highest possible standards of university-managed accommodation • An aspirational benchmark • Protects students’ rights to safe, good quality accommodation, and outlines their responsibilities as tenants

Why The Code matters for universities • A legal obligation in line with the Housing Act 2004 • The Code will promote the continuous improvement of accommodation standards through self-regulation • The Code can help to minimise organisational risk by ensuring housing teams are adhering to best practice

  5. What The Code covers • A healthy safe environment • Timely repairs and maintenance • A clean, pleasant living environment • A formal, contractual relationship with the university or college landlord • Access to health and wellbeing services • A living environment free from anti-social behaviour

How The Code is enforced and regulated • Student feedback should be raised with the individual housing offices directly – if an issue cannot be resolved by the accommodation staff, students can raise the issue formally using the university’s internal complaints procedure • Each institution is independently audited every three years to ensure that its management arrangements for student accommodation are up to the high standards expected by The Code
