  1. The Enlightenment SWBAT: identify and explain the contribution of enlightenment philosophers. Homework: Vocab due TOMORROW Do Now: “A prince is bound by no law of his predecessor, and much less by his own laws…he may repeal, modify, or replace a law made by himself and without the consent of his subjects” -Jean Bodin Using the quote above, first explain its meaning and then explain why people might have a problem with such a prince.

Before the Enlightenment… • Kings and queens ruled without question and there were no checks on their power (absolutism). • They ruled believing in the divine right of kings, as did their subjects. • Monarchies were the primary method of government. • But around the 18th century, things are going to start to change…

  3. What is the Age of Enlightenment? • A time period from 1650 to 1790 when European intellectuals questioned Absolutism and the Kings’ theory of divine right to rule. • But then intellectuals began questioning everything – religion, laws, rights, government, ancient thinkers, science. • It produced numerous books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars, and revolutions. • The American and French Revolutions were directly inspired by Enlightenment ideals.

Philosopher Group Work • You will be broken up into groups. • Each group will be given an info sheet on one of political philosophers and be responsible for filling in the table provided. • Under “Major Political Idea” I expect more than a sentence. • You will have ten minutes to read and fill in your section of the chart. • Once everyone is finished with their portion of the chart, we will reconvene as a class and with the help of other groups fill in the rest of the chart. • This will be collected and worth 30 points.

  6. Exit Question • How would each philosopher feel about the form of government we have in the U.S. today?
