  3. Orval Faubus • Arkansas Governor • Fought to prevent integration at Little Rock Central High School • Sent the National Guard to prevent the Little Rock Nine from attending

  4. George Wallace • Alabama Governor • Very vocal about keeping segregation • Stood at the door of the University of Alabama to prevent two black students from enrolling

  5. Lester Maddox • Georgia Governor • Before becoming governor made national new when he kept blacks out of his “whites only” restaurant using an axe handle • Sold his restaurant rather than follow court order to admit blacks • After all this, he is elected governor

  7. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • Pastor in Montgomery, AL • Promoted Civil Disobedience • Sit-Ins • Marches • Boycotts • Wrote “Letters from a Birmingham Jail” • Gave “I Have a Dream Speech” • Assassinated in 1968 • Show Videos x 2

  8. Rosa Parks • Arrested for not giving her seat up on a bus • Led to 13 month “bus boycott” by African Americans in Montgomery, AL Before Rosa Parks • Courts ruled segregation on buses was unconstitutional

  9. Thurgood Marshall • NAACP Attorney in Brown v. Board of Education • Became first African American on the Supreme Court

  11. Malcolm X • Militant black Muslim • Questioned Dr. King’s policy of non-violence • Promoted “Black Nationalism” – seeking complete independence from whites • Assassinated in 1965

  12. Black Panthers • 1966 Founded in Oakland, CA • Provided services for their black community • Wanted an end to police brutality • Were armed and did not back down • Demanded reparation be paid for years of oppression

  14. Cesar Chavez • Organized Chicano farm workers in CA • Used non-violent protests to improve the lives of farm workers

  15. Hector P. Garcia • Leader of Chicano Movement in TX • Surgeon and WWII Veteran • Became first Mexican American to serve on US Commission of Civil Rights

  16. Betty Friedan • Women’s rights activist • Wrote “The Feminine Mystique” • Helped form the National Association of Women (NOW)

  17. American Indian Movement (AIM) • Group that fought fair treatment of American Indians • Slogan: “Red Power” • Introduced term “Native American” • Temporarily occupied Alcatraz and Wounded Knee
