Overview of Office 2010 • Enhances the Ribbon (introduced with Office 2007) • Same File Format as Office 2007 • Still supports pre-2007 Office file formats • Ribbons have been added where they were missing in 2007 • Ribbons form 2007 have been improved (changed) • OneNote is now included with all editions of Office

Office Web Applications • Run Office Applications within a web browser • Server based • Microsoft hosts on their Cloud offerings • Businesses are able to host their own • Provides the same ribbon and user interface as the “thick” client version of Office • Includes: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote • Supported Browsers: • Internet Explorer 7 and later • Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and later • Safari 4

  17. Neat Tricks with Office File Formats • Office files (Open XML) are actually ZIP files • Rename file from .XLSX, .DOCX, .PPTX to .ZIP • Now unzip and look at the files • Most files are in XML (ASCII)

What is the “Cloud”? • Well … It depends • Each Cloud vendor seems to have their own definition • In General: • An Internet based computing environment where you pay only for resources that you use • A set of pooled computing resources delivered over the Internet • Resource allocation can be adjusted • Although: A Cloud could be built on-premise • Cloud Computing is the next phase in the evolution of computing

  20. Evolution of Computing Mainframe PC ClientServer Web Services Cloud According to surveys of CIO’s and CTO’s, Cloud Computing is going to be important, but there is not enough understanding of what it is to have any specific plans for it.

Cloud or Hosted – What’s the difference • Cloud solutions may be “hosted” or can be built on-premises (depends upon your definition of cloud) • Not all “hosted” solutions are in a “cloud” • A “cloud” is dynamic • Resources can be added or removed to fit the need • In a traditional hosted environment, resources are allocated based on peak load requirements • In a cloud, they can be dynamically allocated

  22. Benefits of the Cloud • Predictable any time, anywhere access to computing resources • Flexible scaling of resources (resource optimization) • Rapid, request-driven provisioning • Lower total cost of operations • Only pay for what you use

Office 365 • Designed for Businesses • Provides Cloud Based Applications including: • Office Professional Plus (Web and thick client) • Exchange Online • SharePoint Online • Lync Online • Cost from $2 to $27 per month per user • Depends upon features and user profile • i.e.: $6 per month per user for Office Web Apps only • Still in beta only – no announced release date

Windows Server Hyper-V Private Cloud • The recent release of Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Introduced new “cloud” like capabilities for Hyper-V • Dynamic Memory • Live Migration • Improved Management Tools • Support for up to 64 logical processors • Improved Virtual Network Performance

Windows Azure • Cloud Platform for deploying custom applications • Considered “Platform as a Service” • Office 365 and Windows Live are “Software as a Service” • Microsoft Hosted Platform • Windows Azure is really an operating system • Provides Scalable Compute and Storage Facilities • Azure SDK • Tools for Visual Studio for building cloud aware applications • SQL Azure • Cloud-based, scale-out version of SQL Server • AppFabric • A collection of services supporting applications both in the cloud and on premise
