  2. The Windows 7 desktop in classrooms and labs provides convenient access to desktop applications through the applications icon. Use this icon to access resident applications on the system. SkillPort Course: Microsoft Windows 7: First Look for End Users

  3. Windows 7 has eliminated the use of “My” from area names: My Documents is now Documents, My Computer is Computer, My Pictures is Pictures. Default classroom and computer lab taskbar applications: From left to right; Windows start menu button, Internet Explorer 8, Libraries, media player, clipping tool and the currently opened application. Thumbnails have been disabled so only icons display on the taskbar. When enabled you can mouse over the icon and thumbnails of the open applications appear.   6. You can add icons to the taskbar for applications you use often. Right-click on the program and select Pin to Taskbar, to add the icon access to your taskbar in Windows 7. In the classrooms and labs these items only remain on the desktop during your login session. Once you logout, the desktop returns to the default for the next user login.   7. There are some features of Windows 7 that have been disabled in the college enterprise environment. They reduce CPU speed and performance with enterprise wide usage. These features include gadgets, sticky notes and thumbnails. These features will be reviewed as part of this training as they are popular for home use. Gadgets: There are 10 default gadgets, 7 for day to day tasks including; Calendar, Clock, CPU Meter, Currency [Converter], Feed Headlines [RSS], Stocks and Weather. 3 are for Media and games: Media Center [media player ctrl], Picture Puzzle [game] and Slide Show [New Picture viewer]. To add gadgets to the desktop, right-click on the desktop, select gadgets from the menu and drag the gadgets from the dialog box to the desktop when it appears.   9. Sticky Notes: A desktop “Post It” note program that can be accessed from the Windows start button menu. By default the note is in edit mode, and the plus sign and “X” at the top corners of the note provide for addition of another note or deletion.   10. Desktop Themes: In the classroom and computer lab environments students will be able to change their desktop themes but upon logout the desktop will return to the default theme.   12. IE8: Windows 7 runs with Internet Explorer 8. New features include web slices. Web Slices are small pieces of syndicated content that enable users to subscribe to pieces of Web sites and notify users when these pieces have been updated.   13. IE8: The user can determine if a Web page has Web Slices by viewing the Web Slice icon on the command bar. If the icon is green, at least one Web Slice exists on the Web page. The user can click the icon to subscribe to the first available Web Slice.   19. In Windows 7 if you have more than one instance of an application open, say two different Word documents, layered icons appear on the taskbar. Use the mouse to hover over the icons and a dialog box will display showing the open documents. You can click on the document you wish to display. New Options: View tab • Navigation pane shows all headings in document, allowing quick navigation to specific sections. • Drag headings in the navigation pane to reorganize a document. • The browse pages tab shows thumbnails of document pages for navigation. • Use navigation pane search text box to search words in a document.

New Paste Options: Home Tab • Destination Theme: Will take on the formatting of the destination document. • Keep Source Formatting: Will retain formatting from original document. • Paste an image: will paste clipboard or clipping tool image. • Same paste options are available with right-click in a document.
