  1. WELCOME FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET IN YOUR STUDENTS DOE: AR184507 BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY EDDU 9451 FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  2. INTRODUCTION FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  3. Attitude is everything… How we think, determines how we behave. How we behave, determines who we are. This concept is as old as mankind itself. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  4. In the Bible… Proverbs 23:7 says, “So a man thinketh, so he is.”  Buddha… “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  5. William James… “Man can alter his life by altering his thinking.” Viktor Frankl… “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s on way.” FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  6. Your students walk into your classroom with a belief about their ability or inability to succeed in your classroom. As important as your skill is in presenting material, your skill in having your students believe in their ability to learn and grow is equally important. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  7. Think of all the great movies about teachers and coaches. “Coach Carter” “Lean On Me” “Mr. Hollands Opus” “Dangerous Minds” “Freedom Writers” “Stand and Deliver” “Dead Poets Society” FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  8. The single most important theme was in those teachers’ and coaches’ ability to have their students think about their ability to succeed. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  9. All of them were about how they changed the way the students thought about themselves and what they could achieve in life. This is true not only in education, but in all other aspects of life. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  10. When you look at the essential characteristics of great leaders, you will always see listed the ability to inspire others. This is really the ability to have others believe they can do and accomplish things they never thought possible. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  11. The students walking into your classroom today are the product of the messages that have received about themselves and their abilities. Some are fortunate to have parents who believe in them and their ability to succeed, others are not so fortunate. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  12. They have been told that they don’t have the ability to succeed in this world. That their abilities and opportunities are limited. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  13. As the leader in the classroom, you are the one who can inspire your students to do and accomplish things they never thought they cable of. Keep in mind, you may be the most successful person your student knows, or will EVER know. What you say matters!! FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  14. Some of you were fortunate to have one or more of those people in your life. A parent, teacher, relative, neighbor, family friend, community member, religious leader, role model, that spoke positive belief in your life. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  15. These messages can also come from the community. The culture of poverty is a concept in social theory that asserts that the beliefs of people experiencing poverty play a significant role in perpetuating their impoverished condition, sustaining a cycle of poverty across generations. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  16. Their belief is that it really doesn’t matter what I do, I am destined to be poor like my parents and their parents. So why even bother and try to change. This is my lot in life. The system is against me anyway, so why put any energy into trying to change it. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  17. Fighting negative community messages can be very frustrating for teachers. DON’T GIVE UP!!! If you do, you are only reinforcing those negative and defeatist messages. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  18. What messages did your community send you about what you could achieve in school and in life? FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  19. FIXED VS GROWTH MINDSET FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  20. Carol Dweck is a researcher at Sanford University and at the forefront of the growth mindset movement. We will be referring to her work throughout the class. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  21. Carol identified students with a fixed or growth mindset. Fixed mindset… people believe their qualities are fixed traits and therefore cannot change. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  22. When a student has a fixed mindset, they believe that their basic abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits. They think that you are born with a certain amount and that's all you have. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  23. That your abilities, intelligence and talents are genetically destined like your height, hair, eye, and skin color . That it is somewhat useless to try to go beyond what you have been dealt in life. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  24. In a growth mindset… people believe their abilities and intelligence can be developed with effort, learning, and persistence. Their basic abilities are simply a starting point for their potential. That they have control over their ability to achieve. Like your weight and body physique, you control the results with effort and persistence. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  25. It is actually a very simple concept. When you believe you can succeed, you are willing to try. When you believe you will fail, you don’t try. Why bother, it will only make you feel worse. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  26. Do people with a growth mindset believe they can become anything they want to be? Another Einstein or Lebron James? No! But they do believe through hard work and persistence that they can improve, grow, and be better version of themselves. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  27. It is the limits we put on ourselves in our thinking about ourselves. I can’t… I could never…that’s beyond my abilities We all do it… FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  28. Example… How many of you think that you can’t sing? -That you aren’t talented enough. -That you can’t carry a tune. The fact that Dave has 5 albums, has been featured on numerous others, and has accolades from Na HokuHanohano and Hawaii Music Awards is proof that everyone has some musical ability! LOL FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  29. There is a difference between not wanting to do something and not doing it because you think you can’t. But, you have to ask yourself if the reason you are choosing not to do something is related to your belief about your ability to succeed in that endeavor, or that you truly aren’t interested in it. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  30. Your fixed beliefs about you will hold you back from making positive changes. If you have a trait that you believe cannot be changed, such as your intelligence, your weight, or your bad habits, you will avoid situations that could possibly be uncomfortable or that you think that are useless. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  31. Have you ever heard people say… “That’s just the way I am.” “That’s just the hand I’ve been dealt in life.” A fixed mindset. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  32. Joe has a fixed mindset related to learning a second language. He doesn’t believe he is good at learning other languages and quickly gives up when attempting to learn one. Is learning a second language difficult for Joe? FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  33. Yes, but not something he couldn’t do if he put the time and effort into it. What is that subject or activity that you believe you can’t learn or succeed in in your life? For Dave, it’s reading music FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  34. One of the most important points in a growth mindset is the concept of, “NOT YET.” FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  35. Not yet…sends two important messages to the student. It’s okay if you didn’t get it this time. Not everyone does. You believe they will get it and your belief impacts their belief. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  36. Phrasing is important… The difference in conversion is the positive response gotten from the two different lines…Benefit vs loss aversion FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  37. Think of how we phrase things to our students… -Fail this test and you won’t move on to the next grade, go onto college, etc. -Do well on this test and you open up a lot of opportunities for yourself to be successful in life FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  38. MISUNDERSTANDINGS OF GROWTH MINDSET FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  39. All you need is a great attitude. As the old line states, “No matter how hard you believe in it or how positive you are, you’ll never see the sunrise facing west. A great attitude is important, but you still need to take action. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  40. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  41. Simply praise effort… You need to be motivated to work hard, but you need to take actions that move you forward. You again need the right skills, knowledge and strategies. If you work hard and don’t improve, you quickly stop working hard. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  42. You need to learn new strategies and ideas if the ones you are using aren’t working. It’s important for you as the teacher to acknowledge the effort they’ve put in, but also have them focus on what actions they took that didn’t work and what they can do differently in the future. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  43. Just build their self-esteem… You can’t just tell students, “Everyone is smart.” “You’re all great.” A growth mindset is about being honest about a student’s current level of achievement and working with them to improve. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  44. Real self-esteem comes from growing and getting better, not from someone just telling you how wonderful or talented you are. Help your students see the real evidence of the hard work and effort they put in their learning. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  45. We need to explain to our students and remind ourselves that GROWTH requires HARD WORK and that we should be embracing the process rather than running away like some of us and our students do. What is HARD WORK and what does it look like in the classroom? FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  46. HARD WORK is the pursuit of personal growth through being prepared, practice, being consistent and persistent. That’s A LOT, but that’s why it’s called HARD WORK! FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  47. Everyone’s heard the saying, “work smart, not hard.” What does this mean? FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  48. The statement implies that if you’re working hard, then you’re NOT working smart, and if you’re not working smart, then you must be working dumb, and no one wants to think they’re working dumb. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  49. We as a society, we downplay working hard and adopt the premise of trying to work smart. FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET

  50. So what do we do when we try and “work smart?” FOSTERING A GROWTH MINDSET
