기호식품 • Via genetic manipulation, they silenced one of the three enzymes which produces caffeine, as Professor Hiroshi Sano from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology explains. • By knocking out the second step, we found the caffeine products have been greatly reduced.
A. tumefaciens: used extensively for genetic engineering of plants. Contains T-DNA (bacterial plasmid) Genes colud be integrated into the plant chromosomes when the T-DNA is transferred. Genetic engineering of plants with Agrobacterium tumefaciens Tumor induced by A. tumefaciens http://courses.washington.edu/z490/gmo/natural.html
Tumor inducing genes in Agrobacterium are NATURALLY inserted into plant DNA • T-DNA is in bacterial plasmid (extrachromosomal, self-replicating) • Infects through wounds, only inserts T-DNA • Contains genes for hormone synthesis • Natural and unique inter-kingdom genetic engineer
Introducing genes into plants • infecting plant cells with plasmids • as vectors carrying the desired gene; • 2) shooting microscopic pellets • containing the gene directly into the cell.
• ( James, C 2002 ISAAA brief no. 27 , Ithaca, NY )
