Short-Term Effects of Drinking • Nervous System- • movement, vision speech affected • Thought process disorganized, memory and concentration dulled • Judgment altered, coordination impaired • Cardiovascular System- • Low intake- H.R. and B. P. increase • High Intake- H. R. and B.P. decrease • Alcohol expands blood vessels, allows body heat to escape, body temp drop

Short-Term Effects Cont. • Digestive System- • Alcohol passes quickly into blood stream through stomach • Often results in nausea/vomiting (increase acid) • Inflamation/ Scarring of the Liver • Dehydration-kidneys increase urine output • Respiratory System • Alcohol depresses the Central Nervous System, if excessive amounts of alcohol are taken in, breathing may slow or even stop

Factors that influence Intoxication • Body size and gender • Small person feels the effects faster • Alcohol moves into the blood stream faster in females (usually) • Food • Food in stomach slows the passage of alcohol into the blood stream • Amount/Rate of Intake • When a person drinks faster than the liver can break it down-intoxication results

  5. Alcohol and Drug Interactions • Factor in ¼ of all emergency room admissions • Your body must metabolize drugs • Metabolism-process by which the body breaks down substances • Most over-the-counter drugs warn against drinking while on the drug

Alcohol and Drugs • Multiplier Effect- • Medication has a greater or different effect than if it were taken alone • Slowed absorption- • Alcohol may slow down the absorption of the drug, increases the risk of harmful effects • Change • Metabolizing enzymes can change some medications into chemicals that can damage the liver or other organs

  7. Driving Under the Influence • Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) • The amount of alcohol in a person’s blood expressed as a percentage • Ohio Limit • .08 • Drinking of any sort: • Slows reflexes • Reduces ability to judge speed/distance • Increase risk-taking behaviors • Reduces concentration

  8. Consequences of DUI/DWI Harm to self/others Restricted driving privileges Injuries, damage, death Regret/remorse Loss of parental trust Arrest, jail, court, fines Police record Higher insurance

  10. Binge Drinking Drinking five or more alcoholic drinking at one sitting Can consume fatal doses Very common on College Campus 

  11. Alcohol Poisoning Severe and potentially fatal physical reaction to an alcohol overdoes Involuntary actions shut down, breathing, gag reflex, heart beat Must get medical help immediately Stomach pumped

Effects of Alcohol Poisoning • Passing out is effect of drinking too much • Alcohol does not stop entering blood stream • Symptoms: • Mental confusion, coma, inability to be roused, vomiting, seizure • Slow respiration-fewer than 8 breaths a min • Irregular heart beat • Hypothermia • Severe dehydration
