South Canoe Wind Project: Shaping Nova Scotia's Renewable Future

Learn about the South Canoe Wind Project in Nova Scotia, aiming to generate 25% of power from renewables by 2015. Discover why the project is expected to face minimal resistance despite noise concerns. Partners plan turbines away from homes; surprising, as turbines' power won't be used directly. Oxford Frozen Foods and Minas Basin Pulp & Paper aim to showcase green tech support and cut carbon footprint by 250,000 tonnes yearly, powering 28,000 homes.

  1. South Canoe Wind Project

  2. What we knew • By 2015 Nova Scotia must be generating 25% of its power from renewable sources • One of the main complaints about wind turbines is the noise they create, but—new turbines are quieter than your fridge 40-45 dB

  3. Why is the project unlikely to meet resistance ? If a wind turbine turns in the woods and there is no one there to hear it… Does it make a noise? Partners in the project agree turbines will not be built within 1 200 meters of a home

  4. What surprised us? Neither Oxford Frozen Foods or Minas Basin Pulp and Paper Plan to use any of the power created by the turbines directly

  5. So why build South Canoe? Oxford Frozen Foods • Demonstrate support of green technology to lure more environmental conscious customers • Want to reduce carbon footprint • Investment Mina Basin Pulp & Paper • Demonstrate continued support of green technology • Get carbon credits for helping to reduce carbon footprint • Provide land for turbine site and collect land lease fees

  6. How will South Canoe help NS? Reduce our By 250 000 tonnes a year Power 28 000 homes
