  7. Road Safety • Continue to provide the convenience of mobility in the future • Minimize the negative effects of environmental impact, traffic accidents and traffic congestion. • Achieve an affluent mobile society • Aim for the complete elimination of traffic deaths and injuries and take initiatives for traffic safety by viewing people, vehicles and the traffic environment as an integrated whole • educate people, including drivers and pedestrians, and make proposals for the creation of a safe traffic environment.

  19. Crash Test Intelligence GOA is based on actual crash test data (including front, side, roll-over, top and rear impact tests), as well as extensive computer simulations. Toyota crashes more than 1000 vehicles for tests/year. We believe that the body of the car holds the key to driver and passenger safety and, therefore, place great emphasis on cabin integrity and impact absorption – which also contributes to greater overall comfort while driving. Our integrity cabin actually absorbs and disperses energy arising from the car’s contact with the road, which makes for an easier drive, better handling and decreased wear and tear.

  20. Passive Safety Toyota's Passive Safety Body GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) The result is a unique benchmark of safety excellence known as Global Outstanding Assessment, or GOA (pronounced go-ah). The GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) body makes for a high integrity cabin with front and rear crumple zones to absorb impact energy in a collision. This minimizes damage and assures dependable protection for both driver and passengers.

  21. THUMS: Total HUman Model Safety Toyota is also trying to improve crash-worthiness in light of automobile accidents and the tolerances of the human body. The front section (crumple zone) has a crushable design that absorbs impact during a collision. The strong cabin then evenly distributes the impact. This keeps cabin deformation to a minimum and enhances the safety of the passengers. The vehicle is designed to provide 40cm of survival space at the passenger's waist. Toyota vehicles have a design that provides the survival space shown in the drawing.

  22. Frontal Collisions Frontal collisions are known to account for over 70% of fatalities, over half of these are caused by 'off-set' collisions. In a typical offset accident, vehicles partially overlap causing a concentration of crash energy into a more confined area. Toyota GOA models - a 40% Offset Frontal Deformable Barrier Crash Test at 60km/h impact energy that exceeds the 1998 European standard by approximately 15%. Side Collisions Toyota's GOA safety bodies are also subjected to Dynamic Side Intrusion Tests and surpass both current US and expected future European side-collision standards. Reinforced pillars and roof rails in the front and centre combine with side door impact beams and floor cross members to quickly disperse impact energy and, most importantly, protect the occupants. Rear Collisions GOA body structure acts as a safety cell that dissipates impact energy into the rear crumple zones while redirecting the remaining force around the exterior of the vehicle and away from passengers. The Rear Moving Barrier Test has enabled Toyota designers to create superior protection for both driver and passenger alike.

  23. Head Impact Protection Structure In the event of a serious accident, this prevents secondary injuries where passengers may hit themselves inside the car. Special materials and construction are used for each pillar and side parts of the roof to lessen impact energy to the head. Side Door Impact Beam Side impact door beams are provided in all side doors to protect passengers in case of a side impact
