  38. Nicholas Copernicus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer and mathematician who held the view that the Earth and the other planets all travel in circles around the Sun. In 1530, Copernicus completed and gave to the world his great work De Revolutionibus, which asserted that the earth rotated on its axis (地轴线) once daily and traveled around the sun once yearly. Not welcomed by the church, it was not published until 1543. Copernicus died on May 24, 1543.

In 1980, as a result of Jenner’s discovery, the World Health Assembly officially declared “the world and its peoples” free from endemic smallpox.
