  1. School Bus Mask confidence course When member enters this area , instructor can “hook” mask with hose strap for Quick release maneuver. 60 degree simulated roof. (with shingles) Tunnel Open beams (2x6’s) (simulate burn through) Closed short wall so member has to stay on open 2x6’s. Plywood door that can swing and close off instructor access until member enters tunnel. Three steps Plywood door that can swing and close off stair or tunnel. 2x4 wall with window (see page 1) Drivers seat Door This is just an “idea” format and the measurements are approximate. Depending on type of bus (School or City) the plans can be added to or changed to suit individual training needs. All framing is 16” on center and screws are preferred to nails. The bottom “plates” of all uprights were secured with bolts through the bus floor. Note: If torch or other type cutting device is used, member must assure safety of gas tank and gas lines to avoid a spark or ignition source. All seats and bolts where removed from floor and where possible, the same holes were used to bolt 2x4 plates to floor.

  2. First wall Wall is built of 2x4’s and covered with 3/8” plywood on both sides. Window opening is 28x48” and aprox 3 feet from floor. This area (16” on center ) is left open so member can pass through using a reduced profile maneuver. Stationary plywood wall that keeps member from climbing above tunnel Plywood door swings left on hinges to block stairs. 3 steps lead down from open frame floor joists Small platform to allow instructor to observe and move to rear of bus.

  3. Tunnel is framed with 2x4’s and covered with 3/8” plywood. Aprox size is 3ft wide by 24” high. Rear door Attach sold plywood door with 2 hinges to block stairs & then tunnel when member gets to rear of bus. A small slide bolt can be used to secure opposite end of door. This should be done on both sides of tunnel. (opposite side will swing to block off instructors pathway so member can only get out by roof and joists. Top view 2x6 joists about 2 ft wide are mounted to side of tunnel at same height of tunnel. Black line designates short 2x4 wall covered with 3/8” ply in order to keep member on joists. (height depends on desired visibility for instruction)

  4. Rear end “roof” leading to open joists. Frame is 2x4’s with cross braces covered with 5/8” ply and then with roof shingles. (angle should be about 60 degrees) The member is told to don “blackened facepiece” at door and led to area next to drivers seat. Member is then told to get on hands and knees and stay to right. (eventually member will come upon opening in wall and told to go through after instructor questions he/she as to what they have found i.e. (breach, 16” on center beams, possible rescue in progress, heavy fire condition at door that prompted engine to breach and attack from adjoining apt, only escape or entry due to collapse, etc) Member will then slide through opening with reduced profile and told to stay low because of high heat condition. At this point instructor will follow behind member into next area Door to tunnel should be secured in the open position blocking stairs to joists. Door to instructors access should also be blocking that passage until member has found tunnel and told to remove mask and do low profile maneuver. After member enters tunnel, instructor closes door to tunnel and moves to rear of bus and waits for member to leave tunnel and don mask. After member dons mask fully he/she is told to stay to the left. Before member encounters simulated roof, instructor will hook rear of mask harness with a hose strap or similar device and inform member that he/she is caught on an object. Member will perform quick release maneuver and don mask fully before continuing. As member encounters roof, instructor will question he/she as to the “feel” of the roof and proper way to ascend/descend a pitched roof. i.e. going up - head first, down-feet first. Going head first down and incline will leave little room for error if it leads to a drop off. Member will ascend simulated pitched roof and encounter open joists. At this point instructor again questions he/she as to the meaning of open joists. i.e. possible burn through, collapse, building under construction etc. member is told to stay on joists and avoid area between them. Instructor should remind he/she to notify others of hazards as they are encountered. When member gets to stairs they should turn around and descend feet first. After stairs. member is told to stay on right wall which will lead them to window. They will be told to escape through window. Instructor will observe if member checks for clearance (of glass shards), straddling of sill and then checking condition of opposite floor area BEFORE dismounting window sill. (spongy – no go!) After going through window, member is told to remove mask. At this point instructor can choose to beat candidate with the hosestrap or buy he/she a beer for a job well done. (chuckle)
