School Emergency PlanPre-planning checklists • Includes checklists for principal, staff, etc. • Specifies inclusion of drill and site maps, utility map • Addresses use of volunteer support teams • Includes an outline to fully implement the plan over three years by evaluating and improving it through drills

School Emergency PlanConstantly changing information Ensure your plan is current and up-to-date: • Phone numbers change • Job assignments change (use names, not just titles to provide a quick check on whether the plan is up-to-date) • Ensure new people in each emergency role are trained and ready!

School Emergency PlanMake it work! • Procedures – what has changed on campus? • Assign responsibilities and share information • Update, train, then drill • Participate in the All School Drill each year • Make October “Safety Month” at your site: Conduct earthquake, fire AND shelter-in-place drills

School Emergency PlanReview Site Readiness • Has Site Emergency Plan been reviewed and updated in last year? • Does everyone know his/her role and responsibilities? • Is everyone adequately trained for that role? • Have recent drills been conducted for all scenarios? • Were “lessons learned” incorporated from drills?

  8. School Emergency PlanAddress crime/violence • Include students in prevention training - will they report? • Consider anonymous reporting hotline • Take reports seriously and follow-through • Be prepared for anything

  9. Model Emergency PlanAddress special needs • Insulin-dependent diabetics - are emergency supplies at school? • Developmentally disabled students - have “go-kits” ready. • Evacuation plans for students in wheel-chairs, etc.

  10. School Emergency PlanInform Parents, Care Providers • How do they get information during a crisis? • What are evacuation gathering places? • Are student emergency cards current? • Are they informed and confident about the school emergency plan?
