The 25th Academy Health Annual Research Meeting gathered experts to discuss research translation in healthcare, focusing on methods to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. Panelists included Bradley Doebbeling, MD, Benjamin Brooke, MD, and David Baker, PhD. They shared insights into the evolving field of research translation, defining various terms, operationalizing processes, and demonstrating successful implementation strategies. Discussions highlighted effective programs for reducing healthcare-associated infections and improving surgical outcomes through evidence-based practices. Key topics included evaluation methods, lessons learned, and future directions in healthcare research.

Presenters • Panelists: • Bradley Doebbeling, MD, MSc, Director of Health Services Research and Research Scientist, Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis, IN • Benjamin Brooke, MD, Department of Surgery, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD • David Baker, PhD, Principal Research Scientist, American Institutes of Research, Washington, DC and Director, Quality Management, Carilion Clinic, Roanoake, VA • Chair: Cynthia Palmer, MSc, Senior Research Fellow and Program Officer for ACTION, AHRQ
What Do We Mean By Research Translation? • A relatively new and rapidly evolving field • The study of how to influence individual and organizational behavior change to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes
How Do We Define the Process? • In 33 agencies studied recently, 29 terms (mostly undefined) were used for this process (Milbank Quarterly, March 2008) - examples: diffusion; dissemination; research into practice; impact; implementation; knowledge transfer / management / translation / utilization / brokering; linkage and exchange; taking to scale…
How Do We Operationalize the Process? • The VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) has used a 4-phase sequence to refine and spread effective, sustainable implementation programs: • Single-site pilot • Small scale, multi-site implementation trial • Large-scale, multi-region implementation trial • System wide roll-out (Stetler et al, Implementation Science 2008)
Topics • Implementing a Novel Approach to Reducing MRSA in a Multihospital Collaborative (Brad Doebbeling) • Implementing the Leapfrog Standard for Beta-Blocker Use during Abdominal Aneurysm Repair in California Hospitals: Translation of Evidence-Based Measures to Improve Surgical Outcomes (Ben Brooke) • Nationwide Adoption of TeamSTEPPS (David Baker)
Presentation Components • Purpose - evidence base, who/what drove the effort • Scope - organization, time frame • How implemented - infrastructure, coordination • Evaluation of impact - implementation methods, structure • Results - outcomes, operations • Dissemination - opportunities and methods • Lessons learned • Next steps
