Timeline • 9/27 Prewriting (Venn Diagram) • 9/28 Rough Draft of Paragraph 1 • 9/29 Rough Draft of Paragraph 1 demonstration • 9/30 Guide packet for Writing • 10/7 Revisions, Editing, Publishing • 10/8 Typed and completed essay due • This timeline can be met by using class time and homework time from 9/27 to 10/8.

Vocabulary • Essay = a composition of several paragraphs about one topic • Paragraph = a composition of 5-12 sentences about a main idea for a specific purpose • Subpoints = supporting details in an essay • Compare = to find similarities in two objects, ideas, or events • Contrast = to find differences in two objects, ideas, or events • Subject = one thing being compared • Feature = one characteristic being compared about two subjects • Rubric = a rating system with descriptors for six-trait writing

  5. Signal Words • There are signal words that tell the reader that the essay is comparing and contrasting. • Use the signal words from the handout in your essay • Signal words can also help you identify a comparison/contrast reading passage

  8. Evaluation and Grading • The essay will be graded according to the guide. • The six-trait evaluation and grading will be done separately from the writing process. • The rubric is in the Compare Contrast Essay packet from 9/27

  9. Effort and Procedures This highly successful person is an excellent communicator. One of the things he does very well is essay writing. He knows it can make a difference in a good job and a great job. Give your best effort and follow the procedures to assure the best performance. Good luck!
