  10. Poems Falling Snow: See the pretty snowflakesFalling from the sky;On the wall and housetopsSoft and thick they lie. On the window ledges,On the branches bare; Now how fast they gather,Filling all the air. Look into the garden,Where the grass was green;Covered by the snowflakes,Not a blade is seen. Now the bare black bushesAll look soft and white,Every twig is laden,What a pretty sight!

  11. Poems Continued… Icy: I slip and I slide On the slippery ice; I skid and I glide— Oh, isn’t it nice To lie on our tummy And slither and skim On the slick crust of snow Where you skid as you swim? Jack Frost: Someone painted pictures on my Window pane last night— Willow trees with trailing boughs And flowers—frosty white And lovely butterflies; But when the morning sun Touched them with its golden beams, They vanished one by one!

  12. Math Center • Add a coloured dot to each snowball. Label laundry baskets with color words. Line the baskets up on side of the carpet and have students stand on the other. Students throw snowballs into the correct baskets. • Snowmen Buttons--Students read the numbers/number words on the snowmen's hats and place the correct number of buttons on each.

  13. Manipulative • Puzzles • Winter Snowball Counting- Place a number circle in each compartment. Encourage the children to place the corresponding number of cotton balls into each circle, using the tongs.

  19. Colouring Pages

  20. Winter Puppets

  21. Art Center • Have students decorate the mittens with a variety of craft materials...any design is fine but both mittens must be the same! • Precut a large marshmallow into 3 sections for each child. Children glue the pieces to black paper to form a snowman. They can add details like hats cut from paper, mini craft stick arms, and cotton for snow

  22. Winter Songs • Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwYEzO-qxyM • Build a Snowman Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx8yp_kf5p0 • Santa Clause is Coming to Town http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWv72L4wgCc • Jingle Bells http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ34DSTjsLQ • S-A-N-T-A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGAYzlqj-aE

  23. Music • Icy Hand Dancing- Have the children sit in a circle. Tell them they are going to pass the ice cube around the circle as the music plays. When you pause the music, they should freeze (HA- get it!) and the child with the ice cube holds it while you count to 1. Play music and repeat, next time count to 2. Next time ask, what number is next? We counted to 1 and then to 2? Continue as there is interest!

  24. Physical activity • Children will play outside for this activity. With the help of the teacher, they will make a snowman and dress the snowman. • After the snowman is dressed, they will do a pretend activity that they are ice fishing.

  25. Other important information

  26. Dramatic Play • Brrr...Get Dressed For the Cold- Materials Needed: Add winter clothing that will fit your children such as boots, heavy coats, gloves, mittens (be careful with scarves- only use them if this area will be supervised. Children tend to make anything long into a leash for their "puppy" friends and someone could get hurt!). Encourage the children to get dressed to go outside. Great practice for putting on boots and coats and mittens and gloves. Try asking if they can get dressed before the timer goes off (use an egg timer set for 5 minutes) and encourage their friends in the Drama Center to help them!

  27. Dramatic Play Continued… • Igloos- Cover the table with large white sheets and play house in an Igloo House. Remind them that their house is made of snow so they will need mittens and blankets. VARIATION: If you dare! Have 2 igloos and provide sheets of newspaper. Have children crumple into balls and have a good snowball fight!

  28. Field Trips ideas • Skating • Sliding • Sleigh Ride • Going to the Sugar Woods
