Categories of Mental Disorders • Anxiety Disorders- Condition where real or imagined fears are difficult to control & prevent a person from enjoying life. A) PHOBIA’S- intense (unrealistic) FEAR….causes people to avoid what they are afraid of- poses little/no danger -Person realizes fear is unreasonable but can’t control feelings
B) PTSD-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • Anxiety relating to a traumatic or terrifying past experience • An example of this? May experience: • *Flashbacks, nightmares, or constant fear, worry, stress, hurting self or others, loneliness • John McCain suffered from this
C) Panic Disorders-episodes of intense fear that occur for no apparent reason • Symptoms- pounding heart, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, numbness or tingling feeling • Person feels like they are having a heart attack/dying

3. Psychotic Disorder a) SCHIZOPHRENIA-Most common and severe mental illness. The disease makes it difficult to tell what is real from what is not real *affects 1 in 100 people worldwide *Symptoms begins in adolescence ages(16-30)
***Symptoms: 1. Hallucinations: sense things that don’t exist (hearing voices) or seeing things that aren’t there 2. Delusions- feeling Paranoid 3. Little / no emotion/feeling 4. lack of expression 5. Social withdrawal 6. Difficulty concentrating 7.Disorganized speech/ behaviors 8. Inappropriate laughter/crying 9. Staring into space for long period of time
