  2. A. Pharisees • Group who separated themselves by devotion to the law. • Interpreted the law and applied it to new situations, studying and quoting famous rabbis. • These sayings were passed down by word of mouth—oral tradition • These sayings were taught even more strictly than the law of Moses • Collected into a book known as the MISHNA

  3. A. Pharisees • Legalism—when rules start to take the place of God in our lives • Why would it be easy for the Pharisees to fall into the practice of legalism? • Have you experienced legalism ? • What dangers does it pose to our lives as Christians?

  4. B. Sadduccees • Made up of Jewish aristocracy—those from the upper, ruling class and priestly families. • Sympathetic to Hellenism, (or whoever the rulers were, for that matter), in order to maintain their own wealth and influence. • Rejected the oral tradition of the Pharisees • Members of the Sanhedrin, the ruling council of the Jews

  5. C. Essenes • Tried to escape Hellenism by physically separating themselves from Jewish life • Couldn’t even touch non-members without having to bathe and remove the pollution • Set up settlements near the Dead Sea • Most famous settlement is Qumran • Lived a communal life; owned property, worshiped, studied and ate together • Didn’t like marriage; not sure of the role of women and children within these communities • Associated purity of the body to purity of the soul. • Hard to join; only allowed to be a member after 3 years of rule following

  6. D. Zealots • Believed in a violent overthrow of foreign rule • Maccabees were their heroes • Would not show loyalty in any way to the Romans, including taxes • Responsible for assassinations of Roman officials; could be called a terrorist group.
